Your best bet here is Network manager f'cking you up! Disable network manager and try bring up the interface manually - have experienced this with lots of distros installed with GUI. A very rare case is SELinux, though might have to try permissive mode too

And with Ubuntu, the network is running at install and after. So maybe Edubuntu has that restriction. For me, I prefer to enforce that restriction myself so I will let the kid use Ubuntu. I just have to install the ubuntu-edu-* packages needed.

I am installing Edubuntu on a PC for my kid. It's dual booting Windows 7.

During the installation process, the network interface is active. However, once the installation is complete there is no Ethernet interface and so network is inactive.

I am looking at /etc/network/interfaces and I see:

auto lo

iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet static

address 192.168.0.1

netmask 255.255.255.0

I am sorry, but I haven't read much on Edubuntu. Could this be the default setting - that the network is disabled to protect the kid from the 'hostile Internet' - just in case?

Else, why this behaviour?
