Hey guys, I think its about time the web industry in Kenya takes shape. We have no proper loyalty to our own, maybe because there is not that much the industry is offering but we are busy supporting international sites. How can we make Kenyans get into our sites and participate properly? I have a great Question and Answer website that I think people would use as a forum of assisting each other and sharing knowledge and experience. David, your thirst for local content is time-bound. There has been a lot of concentration on the foreign based sites at the expense of the local ones. This is because the polarization of the foreign content is developed with the realization of addressing issues affecting the local(read foreign) communities. Our Kenyan participation to, say, Haiya.co.ke etc is not fully utilized due to the insignificant attached. For instance most of the local content sites (SNS-type) are inclined towards politics of the day, celebrity gossips and dating issues. While real-time information is missing a great deal, the target audience is not making any good use of the local developed sites, which is a borrowed idea from, say FaceBook and MySpace. To make the local content visible, in my opinion, the language should be made local, in this case Kiswahili instead of English. But how many of us are willing to embrace Kiswahili as a medium of communication? Let me see by the show of votes!

As long as I see .com anywhere, I tend to believe that it is not locally developed in terms of the content and presentation. Had it been a .ke, then a smile with pride. qanda360.com, unfortunately, is more of a copy-cat from some Foreign sites and localized to fit our context. Good work, though! I'm not dismising it's relevance because a journey of a thusand miles, starts with a single step (sorry for using that cliche). KENIC <http://www.kenic.or.ke> facilitates the registration of .ke domains! Mburu -- Man is a gregarious animal and enjoys agreement as cows will graze all the same way to the side of a hill!

is kenic still charging $50 for .ke while.com goes for $8? i forgot it even exists. the tanzanians offer theirs for free, but after strict vetting (try that here and you get a scandal) -- Bored? Not as long as there is money to made. This is Kenya, greed rule all. I personally would not buy a .co.ke when I can get a .com for a quarter the price, merely out of principle. I would love to support Kenya and .co.ke but I reject daylight robbery. I'm sure many others feel the same way and are just as disgusted about it as I am. I guess there are enough kenic guys on this forum and they should take note of how much business they are loosing due to overpricing of domain names. I own at least 300 names and only 12 are .ke David. On Thu, May 7, 2009 at 3:13 PM, Brian Ngure <brian.ngure@gmail.com> wrote:

Two options for you; Grow .ke till there are 37million names and pricing will come down to 10USD - FYI you get a 50% discount when you own 2,000 domains on .ke but am sure you knew that. or keep off .ke and let it grow to 37million and you can join in when the pricing comes down. I dont mean to be rude, but i started buying domain names when they cost 70 USD for .com and saw that come down to where they are today. The key is numbers. Ofcourse you dont want to be in .de where they have numbers and it still costs over 100euros yet they are still growing (over 10m). Regards, Mich David Mugo wrote:

As Mich has pointed up, it's economics. Also regarding hosting (Local vs Developed world), the cost per 'package' would go down when the number of 'packages' hosted. If you compare the capital expenditure required for doing what 1and1.comlocally as opposed to what they actually spent, I'm pretty sure that the local cost would be more. @Mich In my opinion, the numbers show that since we have fewer domains, we pay more. However, the point that many people are trying is that by keeping the cost high - the price-sensitive market is discouraged from taking a co.keand will opt for the .com. This ultimately slows down the uptake of . co.ke. Thinking of it as an aspiring domain owner - does owning a .co.ke add more value than owning a .com to justify the premium (x5) that i will be paying for? Come to think of it - what value does a .co.ke add over a .com to justify x5 - x10 premium? Tito. 2009/5/8 Michuki Mwangi <michuki@swiftkenya.com>

Guys, help me understand this; how comes 1and1 <http://www.1and1.com/> will charge $3.99 per month (KShs. 3830 pa) for a linux hosting package that includes a .com domain, yet eacdirectory <http://www.eacdirectory.com/> will charge KShs. 2320 for .co.ke domain registration only!

The other side of the coin? Would I be willing to incur losses for selling .co.ke at $10 (or lower) for as long as it takes to break even. Would mean maybe looking for cash for operations from an already broke govt. I honestly don't think that $50 for a .co.ke per year would be a show stopper for someone wanting to put something out there long term... granted - it may be comparatively much more than a domain, but what happened to proudly Kenyan. 2009/5/8 Njoroge Tito <titonjoroge@gmail.com>
@Mich In my opinion, the numbers show that since we have fewer domains, we pay more. However, the point that many people are trying is that by keeping the cost high - the price-sensitive market is discouraged from taking a co.keand will opt for the .com. This ultimately slows down the uptake of . co.ke.

Hi, For kshs. 3500, I offer hosting and domain (TLD) for a year, how would i start telling clients to double that because the name costs the same amount? David. On Fri, May 8, 2009 at 1:37 PM, Josiah Mugambi <jmugambi@gmail.com> wrote:

Look at it differently, Kenic currently makes Shs 20m+ /year from selling .ke domains <www.kenic.or.ke/statistics.html> Is this below needed, about enough, overly excessive? Consider additional received local and internal sponsorships? On Fri, May 8, 2009 at 12:52 PM, Njoroge Tito <titonjoroge@gmail.com> wrote:

I concur with Tito; as an aspiring domain owner, I see no value in spending KShs. 2320 for a .co.ke. Who knows what might happen when KENIC hands over management of .ke namespace to CCK. However, a business entity would probably have a different perspective, they might want to use the .co.ke to brand themselves as Kenyan. Its all economics willing buyer .. willing seller. If a .co.ke is expensive for your needs then get a .com at a fifth of the price and move on. Those who feel that a .co.ke will give them value for their money at 2320 then take it up and bear the cost PS: From the loud complaining here I can tell that a .co.ke has some value which the buyers don't want to pay for . Economics don't work like that. If people are really serious about the price being high ... please go .com
