Safaricom are eating more they can chew or vice, when Bob decided to be a jack of all trades, i.e. selling Compact Disks from safaricom shop to hosting servers on Safaricom business, not forgeting selling 5/= airtime on the streets things are becoming more and more thick, in my opinion when it comes the time to reveiw their licence CCk or whoever should force them to subdivide the business units into companies(follow Nashud's Merari suit) this will ensure each and every company .. Data, Voice, Retail, Mpesa etc has its own QOS and can be struck off the licenses easily without affecting the other services especially Mpesa. My 2 Cents Antony... So some folks at Safaricom have to sit down with the hosted entities and run an audit of the websites, or Safaricom have a software frontend that ensure all this happens automagically?? It's the 10% that worries me more. In many cases, the techie will get bashed hard enough that they'll fix the issue ASAP. When it's the host, a whole lot of blame-shifting and finger-pointing goes on before they admit their fail (if they admit it at all). OTOH, I'd be surprised if Safcom or any other host worth their weight in sand do not have some form of monitoring. Not just for the servers, but for the applications. A few of the bigger hosts I have worked with do monitor the installed apps (Wordpress, Joomla, etc) and notify you whenever something seems odd - script injections, loops consuming 100% processor cycles, other server nasties etc etc. <rant> At the risk of appearing petty, Safcom do seem to have become a jack of all trades, without dedicating reasonable resources to any particular one. Support for these "add-on" services, hosting, is composed mostly of canned messages, and not sufficient technical wizards. Wait a moment! Is it Safaricom's duty to ensure that the configuration of all websites (httpd.conf/nginx.conf/my.cnf/etc) hosted by them is secure? So some folks at Safaricom have to sit down with the hosted entities and run an audit of the websites, or Safaricom have a software frontend that ensure all this happens automagically??
Someone please tell me who needs to take the blame? Is it Safaricom or the techie cobbling up together the website?

My point exactly! If it's the server that was compromised, I'd apportion blame to Safaricom, and all websites hosted should have been defaced - and even server formatted! However, for a few websites when there are several others hosted on the very same servers, I don't get the logic behind someone blaming Safarim, and no, I have not been paid by Safaricom to defend them, nor to blame the techies cobbling up websites without security considerations! Actually, the host is to blame more than the client. The host should have tools to monitor all kinds of activities, scripts, e.t.c on their servers and take proactive measures. Hacking will still be there, but the prevalence can drop upto 90%. International hosting companies do this, why should we be measured by a lower metric? I don't know, I think all Safaricom does is to provide a virtual machine. Installation and configuration of the server OS and applications is actually done by the client. Derrick, That is exactly one of the things I though, but I am not sure. The other is that Safaricom has webserver and something like CPanel for managing Virtual Hosting. If anyone is hosting their website with Safaricom, please tell us what it is like. Is it (a) VM or (b) CPanel?? Whichever way, it would be better if we knew the actual nature of the compromise before we can blame anyone. How was the compromise achieved? What application led to it? Most of the websites are 'designed' using freely downloaded templates. IPS and IDS may not catch all malicious scripts. Even Godaddy had a 'silent' incident where they assisted more than 400 clients to fix their websites. The techies must learn to develop safe templates or just subscribe to a reliable services...e.g rockettheme.com or joomlart. You may have a look at http://blog.sucuri.net/2013/08/joomla-hacks-part-i-phishing.html . Most IPS/IDS also raise many false positives...so a human error on the part of the sys admin can also be possible. But all in all... the techies must style up! I know they can afford all those things and then some! I'm not even sure who said they host said hacked sites .... I've been hosting more than 10 sites at Safaricom and apart from the occasional upgrade have rarely had an issue. While my sites are not high profile, it really is up to me to ensure they are safe and hacker proof including scripts to monitor un-sanctioned changes. On the other hand this is a good opportunity for all of us especially clients to learn that good services cost some dosh. Often times clients do not pay for support and upgrade services until things are thick. This includes the certificate services and and other services. Is it Safaricom's duty to ensure that the configuration of all websites (httpd.conf/nginx.conf/my.cnf/etc) hosted by them is secure? So some folks at Safaricom have to sit down with the hosted entities and run an audit of the websites, or Safaricom have a software frontend that ensure all this happens automagically?? Someone please tell me who needs to take the blame? Is it Safaricom or the techie cobbling up together the website? before we put any other example let me go back to @Derrick , when you solicit for hosted services as a user i.e. provisioning of virtual servers and space do you enquire on security? or you implement the security yourself if the latter imagine each client coming in with their own security appliances, Safaricom data center will be full of Big IP, juniper, cisco Checkpoint et al it would make no business sense, thus it is the primary responsibility of the provider to issue security and if something happens to the hosts they should be in a position to alert the users. Yes end users should also look into security but the ratio between Saf and other hosting co in security issues is alarming. Antony.... The host has a big part to play in security. Bigger international hosting companies are proactive on security.
