Dear Networkers, Hope we are all keeping well. The challenges and issues in the region brought about by lack of this EAIXP have finally come home to roost in my court. Its about time we made this happen, am not sure how but we need an extra gear, because regional services will not be easy to deliver at this rate. - What needs to be done? - Who needs to be involved? - What resources are needed? - How do we attain and sustain it? Am all ears open, and a willing participant to make this EAIXP dream a reality. Cheers. Stan Ngure
I understand that the East African Communications Organisation in partnership with regional IXPs is setting up a task force to establish the East Africaninternet Exchange Point (EAIXP). The National IXPs (KIXP, UIXP etc) in East africa are already a success, so the introduction the the EAIXP just stamps that governments are taking the internet seriously and hence egovernance is the way to go. I also understand from some insider sources that the East African Communications Organisation (EACO) is to spearhead this process. Actually before EACO changed it's name from EARPTO - there was a proof of concept for EAIXP initiated by AfrISPA (when it was under my watch). Links between KIXP, TIXP and UIXP were established and despite low participation from individual ISPs at each - there was huge traffic passing - especially between Kenya and Tanzania. SimbaNet in TZ are the company that set up the links... that was a few years back - don't know where this went since as I've not been involved with AfrISPA since my I stepped down in 2010. On a related note, a proposal that I initiated while at AfrISPA, was adopted by the African Union after about 5 years of work. This was for a project called AFIX - African Internet Exchange System. The goal here was to build African inter-IXP connections via "regional carriers". The project has been funded and (I believe) is about to commence implementation, which consists of both technical and policy, regulatory and commercial interventions.
