Hi fellow skunks, I was wondering. Is there a way to configure a safaricom or orange modem to be used in linux. To be specific, Opensuse Linux. Thanks in advance. Please, anybody help!

Hi James, It should be easy to use the modems on Linux. At lest I know Ubuntu and fedora will pick the modems automatically. I am not sure about Suse. Have you tried to just connect it and see whether it appears under networks? Some time back one had to type the command wvdial and this would connect the modem. I had to use usb_modeswitch to get the modem to register properly on ubuntu 10.04. After that connecting with wvdial is ok. I don't use network manager. On Thu, Sep 23, 2010 at 9:38 AM, Kevin Gichuhi <kevzdegich@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi, It is possible to use Orange modem in openSuse. If its the GSM modem google for the wvdial or use mobile partner UI (similar to what safcom offers), For the CDMA modem, download the BSNL UI installer for your distro from this link. Its the Linux version of what they supply for windows http://www.ztemt.com.cn/ennewzte/service/ziliao.action Rgds. Lenya On Thu, Sep 23, 2010 at 9:48 AM, Brian Ngure <brian@pixie.co.ke> wrote:

@James I think someone misposted this on the wrong email conversation; You may wanna check it out: Configuring a GSM Modem on your Linux Box-Kenya<http://dund-edd.blogspot.com/2010/07/configuring-gsm-modem-on-your-linux-box.html> *INTRODUCTION* I believe at one time or another Linux users in Kenya, have attempted to plug-in their USB modems to their Linux box(es) in an attempt to access the internet. Personally, I've noted a remarkable improvement particularly in Fedora which I have used right from Fedora Core 2 Continue at : http://dund-edd.blogspot.com/2010/07/configuring-gsm-modem-on-your-linux-box... w/r SNN
