Re: [Skunkworks] [ke-internetusers] Re: Let's build an Electronic Payment Solution!

I know of 2 companies in that sort of business from Ghana. DreamOval, whose product is called iWallet. I've had the opportunity to work with one of their managers, Henry, and he's briefed me about their product. The other company is BSL. It seems to be founded by a Kenyan lady and a Ghanian AKA the 'Bill Gates of Ghana'. However from a lengthy article posted yesterday by a Skunker, it seems their operations are targeted at African merchants who want to sell to the diaspora. o_O! --- On Sun, 9/20/09, Wire James <lunghabo@linuxsolutions.co.ug> wrote: From: Wire James <lunghabo@linuxsolutions.co.ug> Subject: Re: [ke-internetusers] Re: [Skunkworks] Let's build an Electronic Payment Solution! I think it will be important to meet them and see what they have (in terms of the requirements I've listed below), what the revenue share structure is and any other important info. Below are my contributions: Problem definition: Refer to first email on this thread: Requirements: 1. Intergration in as many platforms as possible, but most important platforms for a start: Web browser, Mobile, PC/Mac Apps. 2. Open API for developers. 3. Secure: Secure trasmission of data, security of the client data, security of the server infrastructure (hardware and software). 4. Simple, predictable steps for client to make transactions. Simple registration. 5. Common look and feel of the payment UI across platforms in order to build confidence about the system in clients. E.g. a common logo. 6. Registered entity that takes responsibility of the system, customer support, ... 7. System should handle refunds or transaction rollbacks. 8. System should handle client sessions robustly. If client session is terminated, store data, and remind client when client does the next transaction. This seems simple at first but might not be so e.g: If client was subsribing for a service on mobile then battery died or something happened that caused client to go offline, then if client logged into web to use the payment system for a different product then client should be aware of the terminated mobile transaction. 9. Audit system to, among other things, keep track of un-used Serial numbers and the vendor with the serial numbers. 10. Regular back-up system and a sound disaster recovery plan. Quite frankly, I found the "Bill Gates of Africa" anectode stupifying African ICT intellect and innovation aspirations. Wesley, Have you accepted the proposal to be the PM? If so, arrange a meeting to discuss objectives and design specs. You can supervise the Java project while Conrad ( who brought up the payments system API topic in the first place) supervises the .Net project (or port). There are two issues / ideas - a Payment Gateway (API) and an App Store. The following lengthy comments have to do with building a Payment Gateway (Software or Service?) What kind of license should the project go with? GPL, MIT, BSD or ...? Whoever shows up for the meetings to discuss the design specs should vote on the license to be used. Those who are absent can forever hold their peace. Alex Gakuru can explain what these licenses mean . Will the project be software to be utilized by various Application Service Providers (meeting Banking Act physical security standards and regulations) or will it be a (Payment Gateway) service offered by one entity? Me thinks the project should be software offered to Application Service Providers (registered Legal entities). The community of developers can then provide support, installation, configuaration and maintenance services for the ASP's. Which major financial services are running on a FOSS DB? There was a meeting last Saturday at the Alliance Francaise (French Cultural Center - Jardin de Paris Cafe) with PS Ndemo, Seacom, KDN and Mworia (African Pixel). The setting and timing (1.30 pm to 4.30pm) seemed quite appropriate for more serious types. Me thinks it is a great place to meet though attendees should be ready to spend something for juice or coffee. MM

OScommerce should be a shopping cart application if I'm not wrong and will work with available payment gateways like the one being discussed here. There are numerous available to achieve this and carts are not a main bother now.I stand to be corrected though. All in all a locally developed Online Payment App. is the way to go provided all international standards are adhered to. If not where will Africa and specifically Kenya feature in all the global innovation and creativity. We claim to have the minds to match the West and the East but we always run back to them to perform simple tasks in our own community. Who can explain why our roads are still constructed by the Chinese. Juzi I saw a Chinese guy screw and setup some traffic light along Uhuru Ave. - Mombasa Road. What are the Kenyan institutions and Enterprises supposed to be training and delivering ??? Who knows, with a good payment app. it might be big enough for OSCommerce to prebuild its core in their future releases.Let all who can contribute to the life of this Payment Solution put their best effort and openness for this is an application that will change Trade and Info Tech in Kenya and all over. Really keen on how this goes.Let it not be just another big ambitious discussion that dies within the list!!! Thanks, Chris_w. dabnix@gmail.com
