They are number 1 on OS, Productivity, Gaming Contenders on Databases, Mid Size ERP, Collaboration Can we ask Apple to be number one in other sectors ? Hello Dennis, The best reason I can think of is that large entities, not only businesses, require too many communication "interfaces" which increase the overheads involved in getting anything done, not matter how trivial. This easily leads to inefficiencies as compared to smaller and more robust groups. <tangent> Informal languages like those spoken by humans are very prone to ambiguity as compared to more formal and strict languages like Mathematics .... <tangent/> Again in Microsoft, I understand that too many fiefdoms had formed with the biggest chieftainships being that of Windows O.S and Ms Office. These used to stifle other centres of innovation within the company, which means that when a more innovative but smaller sub-group came up, their efforts would be largely frustrated and they would eventually give up. What is keeping Microsoft afloat is their access to vast amounts of cash at their disposal. Many people suppose that this will remain the status quo for a long time since they have the ability to influence markets in ways other companies in the industry can hardly begin to comprehend. A converse manner of how to keep such large forms of organizations working efficiently is described in this article by Richard Stallman, the founder of the GNU and free / open source movement. Steve Ballmer is an excellent CEO despite Microsoft share rallying to 9% on the stepping down news. He managed to double Microsoft revenue and profits in his reign, go big in gaming, and enter the mobile market.
