Inspite of having more broadcasting professionals, a larger market and more broadcasters Kenya's lagging behind as Rwanda goes DTT. ---- Thursday, 27th August 2009 E-mail article Print article Rwanda to have digital broadcasting by next year BY GERTRUDE MAJYAMBERE Rwanda will fully start digital broadcasting by March next year, five years earlier than the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) deadline for all countries to adopt the terrestrial digital broadcasting. This means that Office Rwandais d’Information - Orinfor, a state owned information agency will have the capacity to host eight different channels. The agency’s officials say that preparations are in high gear with the construction of Television and FM radio towers countrywide. Innocent Nkurunziza, Head of Technical Department at Orinfor said they signed a contract with HARRIS, an American company to manufacture, supply, deliver, install and train staff about digital transmitters. He said that according to the contract between the two parties, transmitters will be manufactured next week and after 90 days the equipment will be ready for shipment. With Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial (DVBT) digital broadcasting, top quality images and sound is telecast whereas analogue signals are subject to fade and interference. The trial for digital broadcast in Rwanda started in 2005 with different channels including CNN, TV5 and Rwanda Television. For some one to receive a digital signal, a set top box will be needed to convert digital signal to analogue to be watched on TV or posses a digital TV. According to Nkurunziza, a set top box costs about $100. “When we go digital broadcasting apart from quality images and sound, editing will be much easier, faster and safer compared to analogue,” Nkurunziza said. wow !!! now with the fibre arriving from kenya, they should be miles ahead of us by the time our own fiber dust and politics settles... I will not be surpised if Rwanda is covered with faster internet services before Kenya - despite the fact that the cable comes from Kenya, goes thru Uganda - and finally into Rwanda. ======= Current office speeds in Kenya [after fibre] = 0.78 mbps [takes 150 min to download 800mb movie -but speeds are not true, could go as low as 4 kbps] Wireless [wi-fi] links in Lesotho a small country = 27 mbps [takes 20 min to download 800mb movie - speed goes as low as 12 mbps] -Now imagine an ethernet cable link === Where is our fiber ?

Kenya sadly is losing out. We are no longer the Food capital (Uganda is), Tech Capital (Rwanda - They already have a national data-center running, with vSphere running), Democratic Symbol (Tanzania). I think as a country, people focus too much on lost glory. That's the sad thing. We are unable to guarantee even the most basic of things, no water, power, soon air etc On Fri, Aug 28, 2009 at 11:55 AM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:

Kenya sadly is losing out.
But we are always winning in corruption and squabbling amongst leaders
I think as a country, people focus too much on lost glory. That's the sad thing.
In fact, we are also having problems with trusting our country, that we would rather stay awake all night waiting for some third division football match from Lithuania rather than watching Kenya Premier leagues at a convenient time! It is a shame that even our athletes are finding it better to change citizenship and ran for their host countries, because it is literary expensive to be patriotic in a country where the social services are only reserved to the rich and the famous. Also, a country where the lives of the people is not any important as opposed to that of the 'leaders.' We only survive by God's mercy!

@ Barrack, I acknowledge the fact that we are good at complaining so much, but let us speak the facts and solicit for ways to improve where there is a mistake, without necessarily destroying our pride. I know there are so many things which are good in Kenya, and the few which are bad, cannot under any circumstance be generally applied for making Kenya hell. When I talked about negative issues in Kenya, it did not mean I don't have some solutions to apply. Kenya is a great nation, only leaders are a mess! aren't the leaders a subset of the people? perhaps the problem lies in the people. we replace bad leaders with people who still make bad leaders 2009/8/28 Solomon Mburu <solo.mburu@gmail.com>

@ Kioko, True, at times we remove the speck from other people's eyes while our have got a log in our eyes. May be the question should be: What have you, as an individual done, to improve the quality of life in Kenya. Skunkworks can attest to the fact that when all heads are brought together, a solution is always found, but then, as we might have noticed, there are those who would not want to follow the rules for using the forum, for example but we don't just banish them. I guess with time, the members will appreciate the rules and use them efficiently. when Rwanda goes digital, it is an opportunity for Kenyans to look for ways to pressurize the concerned authorities on the need to make Kenya a safe haven for investors - both local and foreign. case scenario 1: i have a friend who keeps complaining about corruption. when i was on attachment at some ministry, he asked if i could "source" a dvd-writer for him from the ministry at a sub-market price. case scenario 2 I have a friend who has been attacked by robbers several times and even been slashed on the head. now he is rushing to buy a hp core duo laptop at 17 k. he doesnt want to know where it came from as long as it doesnt have gps. And we still blame our "bad leaders" 2009/8/28 Solomon Mburu <solo.mburu@gmail.com>

I think there is also the issue of install base. If more population have analogue TVs and the broadcasters are making money selling Advertisemtnts and then they go the boss and ask for money to set up digital transmission --- it is a hard sell. Rwanda to have digital broadcasting by next year BY GERTRUDE MAJYAMBERE
Rwanda will fully start digital broadcasting by March next year, five years earlier than the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) deadline for all countries to adopt the terrestrial digital broadcasting.

Kipkemoi, I stand to be corrected, I am no expert in the mentioned field, but what I have read from the previous threads here is that 1. KBC through funding from yours truly the "tax payer" will have the digital transmission base. 2. The initial phase is that KBC is supposed to go digital first 3. The other stations then will subscribe to be transmitted through KBC Please correct me where I am wrong, still an individual trying to understand. -- Lusiola Brian Everyone has photographic memory, not everyone has film though.

No idea about that. What I was suggesting is that even if a Technical person pushed for the implementation of the Digital Earlier - there may be someone in finance (or even a first line Manager in Tech) Who said "Dude it is not broken!". So this may be the reason why it was not adopted. Now if there was a lower uptake of TVs and I wanted to start a TV station now most likely I would go with digital TV. I am just trying to offer an explanation or Why it may be - rather than justification or why it should be. On Sat, Aug 29, 2009 at 2:32 PM, Brian Lusiola <lusiola@gmail.com> wrote:

Guys ... ours is a democracy/ democrazy that ... eeerrr .... does not work most of the time... Here in Rwanda is a dictatorship that works if Kagame says digital its digital and then every one follows... I like it this way they also have digital villages and all the networks here are rolling out 3G .. as a govt policy ... and they are also establishing a free market zone .. which if they do before our democracy does then as Kenya we will have lost alot to the rwandans .... its a race... they have a vision 2020... ours is 2030 ... 2009/8/29 Kipkemoi <kip@kipkemoi.com>
