Hi all, Has anyone actually used the safaricom HSPA modem with any Ubuntu distro successfully? I have a laptop which i installed Ubuntu 9.10 but i was unable to use the modem. Although Huawei say they have support for Linux, the details are scanty (or they are in Chinese..?...), i dont understand the instructions there....

It should work out of the box via NetworkManager, which version of it are you using? -- ˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙ Regards, David Njuki @njukey [Google,Twitter,Yahoo]

Try plugging it in then reboot the system and see if it picks up. It worked on a Huawei EV-DO modem. On Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 10:55 AM, Kinuthia Ngugi <kinuthia.ngugi@gmail.com>wrote:

Also note that the more recent the linux version the better the support, so you would rather try 10.10

I have used it extensively on Ubuntu 10.04, it automatically picks or you set it up ion Network Manager. On Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 1:03 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Mine works....with Karmic koala... what you need to do is eject it then but dont disconnect physically, the OS will then pick it up afresh now as a Modem whereas initially it had picked it up as extrenal storage.... On Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 11:02 AM, Job Muriuki <muriukin@gmail.com> wrote:

If your distro is old and you have network-manager, try installing the Huawei drivers manually. I have installed it successfully this way on systems without Gui and it works well. /Bonz On Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 3:36 PM, Eric Mugo <kabugum@gmail.com> wrote:

In addition to all the above, look for an app called *Betavine Connection Manager*. an opensource vodacom project. It does the job of the safaricom mobile office with more features like setting limits and advanced logging Get it here -> http://www.betavine.net/bvportal/resources/datacards/os/ubuntu It also comes with utils and drivers that sort out other *HEADACHE MODEMS*(some ZTEs and other Huwaweis)

Its a documented bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/modemmanager/+bug/521578 <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/modemmanager/+bug/521578>install usb-modeswitch and you should be good to go. -ty On Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 6:39 PM, James Nzomo <kazikubwa@gmail.com> wrote:
