If your distro is old and you have network-manager, try installing the Huawei drivers manually. I have installed it successfully this way on systems without Gui and it works well.

what you need to do is eject it then  but dont disconnect physically, the OS will then pick it up afresh now as a Modem whereas initially it had picked it up as extrenal storage....
