[OT] House break-ins gone chemical

Hi, Well, if you live in a house with a metal door with 3locks ie top middle and bottom locking with a padlock on the middle one only, then I believe its the high time you made some adjustments to your door. Recently a friend of mine was "fumigated" (all pun intended) with chloroform, funny they knew where he kept his keys, so they proceeded to remove one of the panes, long metal or whatever it was grabbed the keys opened the padlock and using another device opened the lower lock and got away with whatever was in the sitting room. Everything in the bedroom was left intact. He wakes up in the morning, crazy headache, feeling weak and dizzy, somewhat realizes the door out is not locked, going to lock it still puzzled is when he finds gas cylinder missing and all electronics. A number of things you must do, - your keys should not be easily accessible especially from outside the house - if your door fits the aforementioned description, then ensure the other locks can be secured with a padlock or any other mechanism - know thy neighbour (the brothers and sister who regularly visit your house) - have all electronics in the bedroom (sooner or later they will find a way to get there with the drug still active)

Insurance will be handy since keeping all electronics in the bedroom might not be possible. For some reason, the way you told it made it funny. On Tue, May 7, 2013 at 12:26 PM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

Approach any of the reputable Insurance Companies and ask them. I use AIG and I can vouch for them. You just do a schedule/list of everything you want to insure in your house, with the value you want to insure each for. They then calculate a premium which you pay. (a) At any given time if you add an item, you just notify them via a letter and they calculate what you need to pay based on it's value - which is determined by yourself. Of course if you over-value, you pay more, but lose when you claim, because they know market values. (b) Every year when you renew, you decide what values to renew. I always depreciate my items to reflect what I believe is mkt value. (c) If you lose an item, you just have to get proof (like Police abstract) to prove that to make a claim. There are some for which you do not have to produce an abstract - like when the Police are not involved, e.g. damage by any other means... @kibui, I was just thinking the same, woe on the day they discover gas masks Have been reading some articles on chloroform, and its not all rosy. For starters it is risky to inhale "overdose" and there are a few fatal cases documented. I use Heritage Insurance and the yearly rates is just under 1% of the value of property. & the beauty of it that things like laptops, ipads and phones have a world wide insurance, so even if you are mugged in Mexico and you phone goes, you just fill a claim form. ./Ok3ch On Tue, May 7, 2013 at 3:06 PM, Nd'wex Common <flexycat@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi,
Well, if you live in a house with a metal door with 3locks ie top middle and bottom locking with a padlock on the middle one only, then I believe its the high time you made some adjustments to your door.
A number of things you must do,
- your keys should not be easily accessible especially from outside the house - if your door fits the aforementioned description, then ensure the other locks can be secured with a padlock or any other mechanism - know thy neighbour (the brothers and sister who regularly visit your house) - have all electronics in the bedroom (sooner or later they will find a way to get there with the drug still active)

What's this obsession with having your erectronics electronics in the bedroom, it just increases your chances of harm. Supposing 3 guys come into the bedroom, what would you do? Hurl them your bottle of blue pills? Its far cheaper, and safer to get insurance and sleep care free. On Tue, May 7, 2013 at 3:21 PM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:
I use Heritage Insurance and the yearly rates is just under 1% of the value of property. & the beauty of it that things like laptops, ipads and phones have a world wide insurance, so even if you are mugged in Mexico and you phone goes, you just fill a claim form.

@kibui, I was just thinking the same, woe on the day they discover gas masks
Have been reading some articles on chloroform, and its not all rosy. For starters it is risky to inhale "overdose" and there are a few fatal cases documented.
I just wonder what evolution theory kenyans should start adapting to, i think in a few years we shall be resistant even to cyanide , with all pun intended:
- In the short term move things (electronics) to your bedroom and bed to sitting area. - Seek insurance cover for the dearly beloved gadgets - Seek a flexible soft wearable gas mask - Acquire different padlocks for different reasons and occasions and store the keys safely - Be sure the bottom lock can be secured with a padlock (I think a tree stub kama ile iko kwa butcher will suffice)

Plus, apart from thugs, fires do happen, and right now, flooding. Insurance does give one peace of mind. Regards, Steve
