Airtel Kenya management and staff has been literally under siege.

http://bit.ly/egu8PD When Airtel Kenya announced what was then assumed to be a permanent Sh1 on-net calling rate about two weeks ago, its management may not have had even an inkling on the kind of storm their move would kick off. But as it turned out, Kenya’s second mobile operator’s management and staff has been literally under siege.

I just pitied a friend of my who joined airtel customer care in november under an outsourcing company called Simbanet DC. They were promised that they would be formaly confirmed to be airtel staff in three months under new management called SPANCO an indian company. So it hit them yesterday the 25th Jan 2011 wen they were given contracts showing that they hv to be reviewed again so a probation of 6 months is required n in that case their salary is 15,300. You kno nothing kills an employee moral than this .. 6 months with no guarantee of reviewal of salo.. Hell i think it inhuman. U cannot pay the tea girl the same amount u pay ur customer support team. And u can not call ur Genetor to fagia under ur desk if he earns 10k more than u. I mean.. common airtel.. Dave, This is a risk what everyone takes in working for a BPO. A disgruntled client can pull out of a contract (with all its legal implications) any time. Also, foreign firms have ruthless business practices, and there's very little Atwoli can do. ./bernard On Tue, Jan 25, 2011 at 5:39 PM, Dave Kirirah <dave.kirirah@gmail.com>wrote:

There is one thing I've noted about Dave's sentiments. The BPO sector is not so much fully developed in Kenya and there is no law which recognizes, protects or promotes the rights of individuals working in BPOs save for fragmented labour laws of Kenya. The fact that someone who was hired through (as?) BPO is still in probation six months later, means there is a loophole somewhere which Airtel (or any other foreign investor) is using as a point for exploitation. While it might not be right to blame Dave's colleague entirely because s/he was eking a living , Airtel needs to know that people can't be shoved off from one contract to another without any proper procedure being followed. The handling of this matter is casual, from my little understanding. On 25/01/2011, Bernard Mwagiru <bmwagiru@gmail.com> wrote:

The BPO sector is a very tricky place to be in, the contract can be reviewed anytime ie upwards, downwards or even thrown out intoto. When Airtel goes into outsourcing, trust they will outsource to indian firms and as such you can figure out what the employees will be going through. You can also bet that, while Airtel makes profits the outsourced company also makes profits but you can be sure the employees will go through hell of sorts. just a thought

this is the downside of outsourcing and cost cutting. Bharti are not here to help us lower calling rates. they are in business just like everyone else. . . On Tue, Jan 25, 2011 at 7:07 PM, Nd'wex Common <flexycat@gmail.com> wrote:

Dave, 6 months probation is quite normal in Kenya. I've been through that 3 times. You think it's inhuman? Your friend accepted the salary, right? If your colleague feels shortchanged, it's time he quit. You know the dynamic of a capitalist economy, right? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

Wash; I went through that once at a famous call center on Mombasa rd. I quit in protest when they capped the commission on inbound and outbound sales and lowered the salary. I vowed never to go there again if the system is the same. The hard part is they even refused to pay me my terminal dues even after "giving" them two valuable months as I helped someone who was taking over from me, I invoked my lawyer who wrote the demand letter. I finally got paid the dues on doomsday. Peter Dave,
