Hi guys, I heard this puzzle on the radio today and didnt quite agree with the answer given. I will try as much as possible to reproduce it as i heard it: "I want to make 3 deposits to a bank. My first deposit was 11k, the 2nd was 33k. What will the 3rd deposit be?" Share your answer and reason behind it. I will share the answer they gave later.

"I want to make 3 deposits to a bank. My first deposit was 11k, the 2nd was 33k. What will the 3rd deposit be?"
I wasn't good in Maths. But from the foregoing, if the first deposit was 11K, and the second one was 33K, the third one should be three times of the second one and six times the first one. Therefore the third deposit is 66K, based on my assumptions, that it is increasing on the rate of three times the original(first deposit)!

55k . 11k and 33k have 11k as their largest common divisor. so 11k, 33k divided by 11k each give the arithmetic progression 1, 3 , x . Two numbers are not enough to derive a pattern! Say the numbers were 1 and 2. In theory any other number is valid as the third number because the set valid integers that can be the third element is almost infinite. It can be argued that the selected winner was completely arbitrary, in which case the contest was not fair. Does the Betting License & Control board oversee these radio competitions by the way to ensure that they are 1. Fair (Can actually be answered) 2. Real (Actually take place) 3. Honest (An actual winner takes away the prize, and not a friend of the presenter) I personally doubt it. It could be anything... there isnt enough info to derive a formula for this sequence. you need to provide the numbers in the sequence before 11 to arrive at some kind of rule.
This is a typical radio/tv "competition" strategy; very loosely defined - no 'real" answer - but it looks simple and obvious. So many many people will take part yet whether you win or not basically boils down to whether the station will choose your answer or not.
These type of questions caused problems for UK radio stations as it was argued that the competitions were actually lotteries as it was down to pure luck whether your answer was 'correct' and the taxes on gambling are a lot higher than taxes on radio stations hence the problems for radio stations if these competitions were correctly classified as gambling not problem solving.
