Shipping to Kenya started a while back. It is very good for electronict (generally small items with little or no taxes). I've had quite a number of items shipped in. - On checkout on Amazon, they add shipping fees and customs duty charges so you pay it all upfront. - Amazon then ships the item to your physical address (not PO Box) using UPS - UPS will take care of all payments and deliver to your doorstep - It takes 5 business days or less (One time I ordered items on Monday and received them same week on Wednesday evening - it's that fast) - You get a tracking number too. I hope that gives you a rough idea On Thu, Oct 8, 2015 at 8:47 AM, Kevin Mutuma via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

I think you guys mean that Amazon is now shipping electronics to Kenya - I have been shipping other stuff from Amazon to Kenya since early 2000 till now. Its only electronics which have never been allowed to be shipped to Kenya. @Kagwe - I always use 00100 as zip code everywhere, not just at Amazon and it works since you first identified yourself as outside the US ./Ok3ch On Thu, Oct 8, 2015 at 9:12 AM, James Kagwe via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

@./Ok3ch, Thanks for the heads up. Been sending my items to a US address and have someone bring them over to Nairobi. This is very good news to me. Just wondering how we could get detailed information on items that are taxable and the tax we expect to pay. A listing of non-taxable items would also be helpful especially if available online. @John, yeah, most probably an incomplete rollout. When you change the delivery address to some Nigerian destination, the goods suddenly become deliverable. Tony.

If they manage to strike a deal with KRA where they tax you straight from amazon and you just pick the goods from posta with no additional fees that'll be great. However, it means we'll probably go back to using "friends & family shipping" as our VAT and Duty rates will probably increase the cost of goods by almost 50% for most stuff. :( Regards, John K. The biggest challenge with KRA is their (deliberate?) inconsistency. It seems like Duty always varies, depending on who processes the transaction. They need to have a publicly-accessible comprehensive lookup chart/database. Tony.

The biggest challenge with KRA is their (deliberate?) inconsistency. It seems like Duty always varies, depending on who processes the transaction. They need to have a publicly-accessible comprehensive lookup chart/database.

Have often thought as Skunks we should have a trust system where if someone is travelling to the US, they can be sent 2-3 small items to deliver when back. Of course the courier would get something, maybe an amazon gift card, or something of the sort. It would round-robin so everyone gets a chance. There would of course be limitations to size and weight, and if customs finds the item, then the buyer is liable for any taxes charged. etc etc Just an idea. Regards, John K. However, it means we'll probably go back to using "friends & family shipping" as our VAT and Duty rates will probably increase the cost of goods by almost 50% for most stuff. :(*
The biggest challenge with KRA is their (deliberate?) inconsistency. It seems like Duty always varies, depending on who processes the transaction. They need to have a publicly-accessible comprehensive lookup chart/database.

I think even with their opening up more countries to ship to, you still need to adjust your search as below. Not all the vendors will ship to Kenya. [image: Inline image 1] Regards, Alex On Thu, Oct 8, 2015 at 4:42 PM, Edward Mayaka via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Cool! I hadn't verified the claims about the Kindle no longer shipping to Kenya. Looks like there's nothing to worry, then. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QJDU3KY?country=KE&redirect=true Tony.

Seems, creating a new address has worked. My previous Nairobi address, was failing, creating a new one has worked. Import Fees Deposit: $17. Anyone know how the $17 import fee is calculated? I think to make it clear... What is meant by Amazon now shipping to Kenya is that items are shipped by Amazon Global straight to your residential address, and they take care of customs and any import fees. You are also eligible for returns and refunds. Previously, you could ship stuff but you had to go clear them yourself or pick them at your post office. I have no idea how they calculate taxes but it's all included in whatever you pay on checkout. Also note that not all items are eligible. When you make your search request, there is a filter to see only those that ship to Kenya. I've attached an order I made a few months or so ago. (You can see the items were shipped on 15th and I got them *3 days *later) I've been using this service *since June* this year year, brought in over 50 items, all got here without a hitch. Here's the challenge I'm facing : - I filter out goods that are eligible for shipping to Kenya, then add them onto my cart eg : This Paperwhite Kindle <http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QJDU3KY?country=KE&redirect=true> - When I proceed to checkout.... BAM! The very same goods cannot be shipped outside the US. - Recreating my shipping address doesn't help either. Anyone with recent successes in orderging the Kindle? @John K, will you be kind enough to cross check if purchasing the above Kindle (or any other Kindle) works fine for you, all the way to checkout? Tony.

@John K, you are absolutely right. A friend just tried ordering for a RaspberryPi kit, from amazon the total cost is coming to $167, but if the same kit is purchased from UK and shipped in via "friends and family", the cost is 8k. I doubt that is the intention. The problem is that it's not clear and left to discretion of a few people. As a result some people take advantage and when you don't go by their terms, they slap punitive taxes on you. What's the use of having a tax regime that people don't understand? Kakai.. If you purchase an Item on aliexpress you don't get to pay as much in shipping because a strategic partnership is in place between PCK's courier services and China Post EMS, ofcourse its always disappointing that the costs have to be calculated manually when collecting your items at the post office but it works! If the same partnerships are formed with say, USPS then it would cost us less to purchase from the US online marketplace. This would leave DHL racking their brains on more value add options to increase their customer base. On Thu, Oct 8, 2015 at 12:52 PM, Kakai Eugene via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

@Patrick, that's exactly what I was referring to earlier - Incomplete rollout! Try change the delivery address to some Nigerian Number and you will see the shipping status change. I think they're still working on the Kenya case.

If the taxes were clear, available especially online and not exorbitant then the need to evade taxes would be reduced. After all we have to pay taxes to pay our greedy politicians. On Thu, Oct 8, 2015 at 12:14 PM, Alvin Jason Ochieng via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

I agree the taxes must be a headache to understand if you haven't gone through the process before alone. KRA details are scanty but if you prod them hard enough they have a list with like ICT items showing duty/ IDF costs in % which may be a big help. We have 2 qualified guys who do our imports but looking at those charts just gives me a crazy migraine. On Thu, Oct 8, 2015 at 12:26 PM, Brian L <lusiola@gmail.com> wrote:

@John K, you are absolutely right.
A friend just tried ordering for a RaspberryPi kit, from amazon the total cost is coming to $167, but if the same kit is purchased from UK and shipped in via "friends and family", the cost is 8k.

Dennis, For books, consider investing in a kindle. I have paperwhite using natural light (not back lit) thus doesn't hurt the eyes. This allows you to procure kindle editions instead of hard copies. It's cheaper and instant. Very convenient for those who like reading. You can alternatively install the kindle app from Amazon on your Android tablet or even windows laptop which works in the same way. Only that if you're an ardent reader it'll hurt your eyes.
