Re: [Skunkworks] KPLC Prepaid Elec - Best Practices

1 bit of advice, once you buy a token and it has not been loaded you cannot buy another token - happened to me once, I noticed that it was running dry and bought a token via mpesa, then ran away to Kajiado before loading, and those left in Nairobi could neither buy a new token by any means since I was unreachable for some time :-)
./Ok3ch
Hmm, that's an interesting one. Wonder what is the purpose of that restriction. To avoid some kind of cheating or technical limitations? So what happen if someone by a token and loose it before loading ? Happen a couple of times to me but with cellphone. Shopping at Nakumatta, I get the receipt and throw it on my way out forgetting that receipt also double as airtime token. Muriithi

I usually buy for a thousand bob but in the beginning of the month i get around 72-75 units in the middle of the month i get 65 units whats KPLC logic in that ? On 22 April 2013 01:55, William Muriithi <william.muriithi@gmail.com> wrote:

The KPLC system is suspect according to me. They need to have portal where someone can check their account payments and how the units allocated were worked out. I think they apply the usual standing charge of 120 sh monthly and depending on when you last recharged your meter the standing charge might be applied. For example if you paid 2500sh in January and the units last you up-to April then the you will be charged 120 sh per month for the last 3 months upfront when you purchase more units hence you get way less units. 1.The trick is to avoid VAT charges by making sure in a calendar month you do not exceed 200Units. 2. Make sure your landlord does not light up the stairways and other common areas by letting your power run out and see where else power will be disconnected. 3. When paying by Mpesa, purchase a day before units run out. This takes care of instances where delays occur. 4. Using the shortcodes provided in the menu, check which devices in the house has more consumption and regulate their use. On Mon, Apr 22, 2013 at 10:44 AM, Mutwiri Kiogora <mutwirik@gmail.com>wrote:

I get no 2. Sometimes the landlord/care taker will siphon your power to power common utilities (corridor lights, water pumps, welding the neighbouring mjengo - this happened to us once, etc). So if you let your power run out, these common utilities will be powered off. I am very much interested in no 4 as well. Number 2 is just what Lawi explained. As for number 4, there was a booklet Kenya power provided that had a shortcode which you could key in to check usage per device. I do not recall the code as I lost my copy. Used it when my power kept tripping coz of over-usage. The problem was however on a faulty meter. 4. Using the shortcodes provided in the menu, check which devices in the house has more consumption and regulate their use.

well, here are my additions/corrections 1. you can always buy as many tokens as you want but not on the same day, there's some limit by Kenya Power something like 2 times per meter per day though this can always vary. 2. you can always get the token details of the purchase from where you bought them, in case you loose the token 3. the more units you buy gets you in a more expensive tariff as noted in the pdf 4. you cant buy any unit if the amount you are purchasing for can't even pay the outstanding charges, the transaction will not even go through e.g buying amount of 100 and you have an outstanding Fixed Charge of 120 5. an agent will not charge you anything and the token is produced instantly plus a breakdown of where your money went. more to that you have a clear point of blame in case of anything, if you loose your paper receipt you can always get it again and again Regards, Erastus Gichuhi KE +254 733 725373 SOM +252 79 104503 P.O. How exactly does the meter know the different devices plugged in?

Number 2 is just what Lawi explained. As for number 4, there was a booklet Kenya power provided that had a shortcode which you could key in to check usage per device. I do not recall the code as I lost my copy. Used it when my power kept tripping coz of over-usage. The problem was however on a faulty meter.

I get no 2. Sometimes the landlord/care taker will siphon your power to power common utilities (corridor lights, water pumps, welding the neighbouring mjengo - this happened to us once, etc). So if you let your power run out, these common utilities will be powered off.
I am very much interested in no 4 as well.
