I hope some of you have been in such a situation. I have a roaming boss, travels everywhere and makes calls, calls and more calls! I am looking into a way of saving the expenditure on calls, especially those "roaming" charges. The problem is that he does not carry a laptop with him and is not tech savvy! It's not gonna be easy to handle this, but I am ready to get him any gadget that would make me save the telephone bills whenever he is roaming. I am thinking of a wireless handheld device that can make (and even receive) phone calls via a VPN connection. I have an enterprise class telephone system (Avaya) hosted somewhere and I also have a VPN service on a Cisco device that is connected to this phone. I can use IP Phones that have VPN capability. Can be SIP device too, though I'd love to get something that supports H.323 (or both)... Anyone have bright ideas? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

Good old Nokia e61i kuenda juu. they have SIP clients in built if im not wrong. All he'll need is a data plan. On Sun, Dec 26, 2010 at 1:05 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

Hello @Wash, you will have major problems with voip because the user is restricted to wi-fi zones and such public zones will not guarantee latencies for voip traffic, are so dependent of signal levels too. I tested a professional voip software application for handsets sometime early last year for a few months on travels and had a lot of issues with quality whether over grps or 3g, unless you can get g711 to work with stability. Most mobile operators will not guarantee voip over such networks because of the uplink capacity. I'd suggest you move him to a blackberry service for emails and let him add users on the blackberry instant messenger service for instant communications. HTHs. :-) On Sun, Dec 26, 2010 at 1:05 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

@Aki, Thanks for the insight but this gentleman is NOT the type to use such gadgets as Blackberry, unless it can be used to "make/receive" calls. To be honest, he uses a Nokia 6310i quite old already but he can make calls and that is what matters. I can only get him another deice IF that will change his life - the way he makes calls. I've found something that looks promising - Solo DTMF<http://www.sosoftware.com/solo-dtmf-client-for-avaya-ip-office-ec-500-communication-manager-one-x-mobile>- have to investigate further. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

@Wash, some more thots fro me and I hope you have success on the link you provided below. Keep these factors in mind too : - Roaming data can cost upto 2.5USD/Minute on edge and 3g is can be much more expensive. - A Voip call on an average consumes 1Mbyte per Minute. Therefore, a one minute call on roaming data can cost 1.25USD/Min. HTHs. :-) On Sun, Dec 26, 2010 at 9:02 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

There are companies like http://www.lebara-mobile.co.uk/prepay/rates that offer chaper rates compared to what you will be paying on a roaming tariff while abroad depending on which country you will be going to. Check out more info on their rates and compare against what you get charged for rowming ... On 26 December 2010 19:43, aki <aki275@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Techi, Do you think this is any different than "Avaya Flare<http://www.avaya.com/usa/topics/unified-communications/>" theory? I already have Avaya Aura Communications Manager so Avaya Flare would just be a tablet I need to buy, but whether it is the Flare or the Cisco UMC, the one thing that I need to address is the "roaming" costs, which both don't have a clear cut way of addressing unless I am missing something obvious. Give me your thoughts... On Wed, Dec 29, 2010 at 8:32 AM, techi <myskunkworks@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Wash, Yes, there is a difference. With Cisco UMC, u do not require a tablet or any specific device. Cisco UMC works on iPhone, Blackberry, Nokia (Symbian) and Windows Mobile, which covers a wide range of smart phone-hence scalable and can be used by the entire organisation. The downside of it is that it may not interoperate with the Avaya Communications Manager in this case. Avaya Flare is certainly a better idea in this case, provides your boss with an executive platform to conduct business while out of the country and is interoperable with the Avaya Communications Manager (similar to the iPad and Webex). A SIP client or skype running on a smart phone would offer a cost effective solution but may lack supplementary features such contact lookup, voicemail, call forwarding e.t.c On 12/29/10, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

Cisco UMC will require a data connection, just like Avaya Flare. Now the data connection while roaming is another! I still think the SoLo DTMF is a better idea but that again is debatable. In my case, I don't need anything gisty. Just the ability to make/rcv calls cheaply. On Wed, Dec 29, 2010 at 2:14 PM, techi <myskunkworks@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Wash, SoLo DTMF sholud be ok, very similar to Cisco UMC. Please note the additional mobile servers and CTI configuration required: http://support.avaya.com/css/P8/documents/100123153 On 12/29/10, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:
