Hi folks, I am not the type that is quite enthusiastic about torrents but looks like I have to learn - and I think it's better to hear the diversity of reasons on this forum. What makes torrents a better/attractive way to download/share files? How can I speed up a torrent download? I mean, can I trick the app/system into downloading faster? I have to download a 2.7GB file over a 128/256Kbps link. This is normally not a problem if it's a regular file as I can get it down in a day or so using Download Accelerator. Now, with the torrent system, this thing is telling me about 22 years ETA (to get the file) :-) There is no viable alternative to the download at the moment since I don't want to register for their spam. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

Look for a torrent with as many seeders as possible. the more the seeders, the healthier the torrent 2009/6/23 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>

Hi, I stand to be corrected, but the speed of a torrent is directly proportional to how many other users are downloading it, since it kind of works in a way that makes each user a "server". You download some bits from me, I download some bits from you, as you download from another etc. So the best time to download a torrent is when it's hot. As for tricks, hizo sijui...... that's just my two cents :-) 2009/6/23 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>

@ Odhiambo, I use Free Download Manager and set everything to almost max.

22 years waiting for a download a file? Jesus. Did the torrent factor in the fiber coming in June/July depending on who you ask? Your best option would be the Download Accelerator. The torrents depends on peer to peer network and you need other peers to have downloaded the file, either the whole of it or part of it for the speeds to be good. With DA, you may download some files faster that torrents. DA has a way of getting multiple links and downloading from them hence increasing the overall speed. 2009/6/23 Edwin Kaduki <ekaduki@gmail.com>

I guess it also depends on your link, for example, on my link, torrents have a low priority than direct downloads, so even though I feel torrents are better, I mostly use direct downloads. ./Ok3ch 2009/6/23 Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com>

Hi Wash, I will answer the last question i.e "How can I speed up a torrent download? I mean, can I trick the app/system into downloading faster?" 1. Use a download manager with a torrent extension/plugin: Check out http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm . You can get the plugin here: http://files.freedownloadmanager.org/lite/fdminst-lite-bt.exe 2. Or use a dedicated bit torrent client . I prefer http://www.utorrent.com/downloads . I hear vuze is also good but i have not tried it: http://www.vuze.com/ 3. Go to a torrent site like www.mininova.org or search across multiple torrent sites using www.torrentz.com 4. Grab the file which has a high seed to leechers ratio. Seeds refer to the hosts(machines) which have the file you want and allow download, while leechers are people/hosts who are currently downloading that file. its important to look at file comments, from people who have downloaded the file, otherwise, you might just download a file that is corrupted 5. Once the download completes, you can stop all the seeds from uploading or if you have enough bandwidth, you can become a seed yourself Hope this helps Hi folks, I am not the type that is quite enthusiastic about torrents but looks like I have to learn - and I think it's better to hear the diversity of reasons on this forum. www.isohunt.com is another aggregated torrent search engine. Bit torrent is also a client that is highly rated. I use torrents(to avoid paying Rapidshare) on an AK connection. Basically, the torrent just idle during the day and downloads at night when no one is at the office(it does so on its own, i didnt set it up to behave that way ). To give you an idea, my Fedora 11 torrent did 40% in the first 24 hours and took the rest of the week to complete the remaining 60 %. I haven't tried vuze too, though i also saw that it is highly recommended. 2009/6/23 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>

Utorrent is VERY OK. Also you might want to look for an option like "encrypt data" or something to that effect. Most European and American ISP's dont like torrent traffic so they really try to deny as much as possible. Encrypting the data traffic, from the POV of someone seeding or downloading from the States or Europe is nessesary ama the guy will be 'nyogewad' for speed. You have to enable the option to encrypt your traffic otherwise you wont be able to download from someone who has enabled it. On 06/23/2009, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi folks,
I am not the type that is quite enthusiastic about torrents but looks like I have to learn - and I think it's better to hear the diversity of reasons on this forum.
Now, with the torrent system, this thing is telling me about 22 years ETA (to get the file) :-)
*I know you are the admin in the network, if you are connected behind a firewall I believe that you should setup port forwarding. This will improve the incoming connection. Also try & use encryption since torrents may be blocked @ ISP level. I hope that helps.*
There is no viable alternative to the download at the moment since I don't want to register for their spam.

There could be a way to get around all this ---
From what i have discovered on the net - most of the torrent files have the same files stored in the following very popular file share zones :
rapidshare megaupload megashares etc etc But mostly rapidshare. Just type the exact same file name but include "rapidshare" in the word you are searching. For example : here is a part link to download iphone firm ware: http://rapidshare.com/files/245840395/iPhone1_2_3.0_7A341_Restore.part1.rar - Combined with the inherent Mozilla Browser download accelerator "* DownThemAll*" - one can usually get a 1.5 GB in a about a typical 8 hr working day [for free users] and [about 2 hours or less for premium users]. This "*DownThemAll*" bypasses any firewalls that prevent download accelarators as far as i have tested on different networks. One catch though - some sites give fake rapidshare links to increase their google searches. But you will know the right ones by testing the links. Some are deleted because of copyright. But the guys uploading have always come up with clever abbreviations to keep these files alive and well on the internet. So my advise - keep searching on rapidshare [try different combinations of search keywords] - i have never failed to find what i want [so far]

do not use vuze, not unless you are bound to live forever. that thing is very slow. bit torrent works well for windows. for linux use aria2c. it does torrents overnight while vuze takes weeks for the same torrent. sorry though that aria2c is command line based, no cool gui like vuze. I found Utorrent works great for Mac OS. But so does TomatoTorrent. The Latter is Visually devoid but is fully functional. Rahim. On Aug 4, 2009, at 10:39 AM, Dennis Kioko wrote:

http://rapidshare.com/files/245840395/iPhone1_2_3.0_7A341_Restore.part1.rar
- Combined with the inherent Mozilla Browser download accelerator "* DownThemAll*" - one can usually get a 1.5 GB in a about a typical 8 hr working day [for free users] and [about 2 hours or less for premium users].

With Wine, you could still use uTorrent on Linux like I do :) Very tiny and fast.. doesn't hog resources either. 2009/8/4 Rahim Kara <rahim@applecentre.co.ke>
I found Utorrent works great for Mac OS. But so does TomatoTorrent.
The Latter is Visually devoid but is fully functional.

is very slow. bit torrent works well for windows. for linux use aria2c. it does torrents overnight while vuze takes weeks for the same torrent. sorry though that aria2c is command line based, no cool gui like vuze.

From what i have discovered on the net - most of the torrent files have the same files stored in the following very popular file share zones :
rapidshare megaupload megashares etc etc
But mostly rapidshare. Just type the exact same file name but include "rapidshare" in the word you are searching.
