Utorrent is VERY OK.
Also you might want to look for an option like "encrypt data" or something to that effect. Most European and American ISP's dont like torrent traffic so they really try to deny as much as possible. Encrypting the data traffic, from the POV of someone seeding or downloading from the States or Europe is nessesary ama the guy will be 'nyogewad' for speed. You have to enable the option to encrypt your traffic otherwise you wont be able to download from someone who has enabled it.
www.isohunt.com is another aggregated torrent search engine. Bit torrent is also a client that is highly rated. I use torrents(to avoid paying Rapidshare) on an AK connection. Basically, the torrent just idle during the day and downloads at night when no one is at the office(it does so on its own, i didnt set it up to behave that way ).
To give you an idea, my Fedora 11 torrent did 40% in the first 24 hours and took the rest of the week to complete the remaining 60 %.
I haven't tried vuze too, though i also saw that it is highly recommended.

I will answer the last question i.e "How can I speed up a torrent
download? I mean, can I trick the app/system into downloading faster?"1. Use a download manager with a torrent extension/plugin: Check out
http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm . You can get the
plugin here: http://files.freedownloadmanager.org/lite/fdminst-lite-bt.exe
2. Or use a dedicated bit torrent client . I prefer
http://www.utorrent.com/downloads . I hear vuze is also good but i
have not tried it: http://www.vuze.com/
3. Go to a torrent site like www.mininova.org or search across
multiple torrent sites using www.torrentz.com
4. Grab the file which has a high seed to leechers ratio. Seeds refer
to the hosts(machines) which have the file you want and allow
download, while leechers are people/hosts who are currently
downloading that file. its important to look at file comments, from
people who have downloaded the file, otherwise, you might just
download a file that is corrupted
5. Once the download completes, you can stop all the seeds from
uploading or if you have enough bandwidth, you can become a seed
yourself
Hope this helps
Thank you so much for your answers. Now I know what seeders and leechers means and I must say I now know what to look for, why it works that way.
Quite a fast way to learn!
