Safaricom 3G Billing System ... gone bonkers
I unintentionally send "balance" to 450 from a certain data line I am using on 3G (prepaid) and got this: <Quote 0> Name: Number: Safaricom Content: Data Bundle Balance: 17 MB expires on 2012-05-21 10:33:41. Time: 23/04/2012 14:23:15 </Quote> This got me alarmed, because I just bought 1.5GiB on the said line on Saturday, and never quite used it to this extent. So I called Customer Care to find out and the lady told me she is not able to access the system to get the usage details, so I should head to selfcare.safaricom.co.ke and register, then find the data. Not sure that is possible, but I don't like the process. Mmm...I've seen this before and can offer some explanation on how mobile operators do mobile data billing. The concept involves a procedure caller Reservation and Commit. During reservation, a quota of your balance is allocated to enable to access the internet. During this time is Available balance (A) = Actual - Quota The Commit procedure will report to the billing system what your actual usage of the quota is and the difference "commited" back to your account. During this time Available balance (B) = Actual - (Usage of the Quota) Commit procedure kicks in when a session is either 75% of the quota allocated or completely disconnected. If you want to check the "correct" balance, then disconnect your session. The billing system will get the usage units and calculate the Available. balance. While in active session, the Reservation and commit requests will in be play and that's why you will get such conflicting results. This "anomaly" is becoming very common nowadays due to the "always-on" nature of smart phones and is not unique to one opco or the other. All use the same Reserve/Commit procedure. i will not even begin to talk about my experience over the last 6 days when I decided to try out one of the daily bundles and following day decided to deactivate it and buy a monthly bundle....my head is still reeling and I have no idea what is going on because I receive between 10-20 texts from Safaricom about this expiry and that failed renewal and this bundle having 1MB left and that bundle being 0 - then to crown it all - my airtime gets chewed and I start getting conflicting reports when I check my balance using *144# Sijui nifanye nini..... So I called Customer Care to find out and the lady told me she is not able to access the system to get the usage details, so I should head to selfcare.safaricom.co.ke and register, then find the data. Not sure that is possible, but I don't like the process.
A few minutes later, I again sent "balance" to 450 and got the following:
<Quote 1> Name: Number: Safaricom Content: Data Bundle Balance: 29 MB expires on 2012-05-21 10:33:41. Time: 23/04/2012 15:06:40 </Quote>
Now, suddenly, there is 12MB more to my data bundle! Such a big discrepancy I must say.
However, this still doesn't explain to me where my 1.4-something GiB has disappeared to... I am waiting till their system is up for an explanation.
Anyone seeing the same with Safaricom??
