Help a SPAM Bomb Victim.. :(

Hey guys, I am running MDaemon and it seems like someone has his spam guns pointed at me. Our server does a domainpop to our ISP, with which we have an account. When I log on to our mailbox at the ISP, I see a ton of junk mail. Our mail server in the office is terribly slow and when I look at the process monitor, I see MSpamD.exe hogging memory like nobody's business. It looks like someone is trying to DoS us... Anything I can do on the MDaemon configs to counter this attack? Kindly advise. S. -- שִׁמְעוֹן

@Simon, what smpt port are you running?

Simon, Does you ISP have antispam? Ideally they should filter all spam before it gets to your domainpop account. I'd also advise you change the design of the mail service and do direct delivery instead, have a look at Zimbra as an alternative. I never see the advantage of doing domain POP myself, may be someone can tell us why its advisable. -----Original Message----- From: Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com> Reply-to: Skunkworks Forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> To: Skunkworks forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Subject: [Skunkworks] Help a SPAM Bomb Victim.. :( Date: Fri, 27 Nov 2009 13:52:24 +0300 Hey guys, I am running MDaemon and it seems like someone has his spam guns pointed at me. @Simon - Your problem is not the SMTP because you are picking the junk from a domain pop account . The only way out of it is to ask your antispam provider to do his work or do direct delivery and take over spam control since you are paying for a service not delivered. -----Original Message----- From: Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com> Reply-to: Skunkworks Forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> To: Skunkworks Forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Help a SPAM Bomb Victim.. :( Date: Fri, 27 Nov 2009 14:39:28 +0300 @aki SMTP 110, POP 25 @Alex They do, but they say that we have to subscribe to the service and pay more. @Simon. As Alex suggested and I'll add, go online to a hosting provider and subscribe to a mail hosted service. Use this service as secondary, once migrated all accounts to it, take the primary down and go for a complete self hosted solution. Sometimes, ISPs too contribute to the spam mess. @ Alex, the reason for the funny layouts is due to bandwidth usage. With cheaper bandwidth, there is no need for ISP hosting anymore.

IMO it's your ISP's job to filter the junk before it gets to your inbox, and I don't see why you should pay more for that to be done. I'd only pay more if they've got a free basic service, then a premium, paid-for one with bells and whistles like quarantine, whitelisting, filter sensitivity adjustment, etc. I think it's even worse knowing the tools to do all these are available open-source and free. Hi Simon, Why not setup a 'real' mail server and have the mails directed to it - an open source based for that matter. With one, you have all the controls at hand to tweak your mail server as you consider appropriate + space and accounts! I'm thinking the computer and the mdaemon hosting setup consumes the same resources an 'ideal' server would consume. Why remain in a cell while all the gates remain open... reminds me of some cartoon, see attached.Very true!!! Chris_w. dabnix@gmail.com

Hey Chris, Thanks for your input. Actually, I'm in office setting up a virtual mail and proxy server on Centos [I'm using a VM]. Once the thing is up and running, we'll set up a real one for our organisation. Anyone else interested in setting up a mail server [first timer like myself] should check out http://www.linuxmail.info I find it quite informative. Thanks. 2009/11/28 Chris W. <dabnix@gmail.com>

You might be surprised to learn that spam is not a problem specific to MDaemon. If your house is leaking changing your tie will not stop the leak. On Sat, Nov 28, 2009 at 3:09 PM, Chris W. <dabnix@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Simon, Have you tried multipop? This way, only mails for genuine users on mdaemon will be collected, unless they have used your user accounts as the REPLY-TO address, then you are in deep.. On Fri, Nov 27, 2009 at 1:52 PM, Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com>wrote:
