Hallo people, I am interested to know exactly how this works - has anybody tried it ? Or do the owners of "Ujanja" have the master program GUI for locating end users lost phones on request ? w/r Stephen N.

Someone explain.....just lost a phone and I can't afford to lose another... On Tue, Sep 8, 2009 at 10:28 AM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:

Last time i checked on their site, which is a while back, they mostly tracked phones which had in built tracking particular the symbian range. For most mid end phones, they werent supported, most probably due to their proprietary OS, which limits apps that can be developed for them. On 08/09/2009, kennedy kariuki <kkairu@gmail.com> wrote:

Just curious how "useful" this app is. Basically, the only way to track your device is if the so-called thief connects the device to the internet (unless am mistaken)? And lets say you can track-it, then what? If there's one thing I know its that the police dont give a hoot when you lose your phone. The phone providers normally have all the info necessary to track a lost phone but even if you go to the police and ask that they follow it up they'll just be like "simu zinaibwa kila siku kwa yako iko na nini?" Tracking is all well and good but if there's no follow up then the utility of the whole service is null. -Billy

Chances of getting your phone back is almost nil. The phone thieves defeated Michael Joseph and Phillipe Vandebrouk before Rene Meza and even Sprint PCs and AT$T cannot tame them. Its hard recoverting a stolen phone because first most users have no sleuth knowledge and again the phone companies are very much hindered since it cost as less as 100 bob to change an IMEI of a phone and so the tracking doesnt work On Tue, Sep 8, 2009 at 12:43 PM, kennedy kariuki <kkairu@gmail.com> wrote:

I would say that Ujanja more of discourages phone theft (and might prevent it in the long term) than preventing phone theft in the short term. Basically it hinges on phone thieves not seeing it worth flashing a phone's ROM (which is illegal in the ICT act/bill), where I believe the Ujanja app is stored. If someone tries to use the stolen phone, the true owner will get a text message and the true owner will also know the new number that has been put on the phone and thus can contact the 'new' buyer. Since one needs ID to buy a SIM card, the original owner is more confident of reporting the new number to the police and records can trace the ID of the 'new' buyer. Now, the 'new' buyer is likely guilty of possessing stolen property and it's in his/her best interest to return the phone to the original owner before the issue goes to the authorities. The issue here is with the efficiency of the police, sadly. I think Ujanja needs to be more intergrated with the police than a product of a private company's efforts to phone theft solution. EADH ofcourse need to make their money. Basically it hinges on phone thieves not seeing it worth flashing a phone's ROM (which is illegal in the ICT act/bill), where I believe the Ujanja app is stored.
Are you sure its stored in the ROM? AFAIK ROM means you cant install in it?
Since one needs ID to buy a SIM card,
I believe there still are quite a good number of road-side vendors who sell SIM cards without requiring an ID.
the original owner is more confident of reporting the new number to the police and records can trace the ID of the 'new' buyer.
Only true if the SIM card(s) you have were bought before the registration requirement was enforced. I think Ujanja needs to be more intergrated with the police than a product
of a private company's efforts to phone theft solution. EADH ofcourse need to make their money.
True - but considering we still fill in abstracts manually... As a by the way - forgive my ignorance but what does OB stand for?? :)

Roadside will end going forward the deadline being dec 2009. Any no without details will be deemed unused and providers will churn the numbers. On Tue, Sep 8, 2009 at 3:18 PM, Billy <billyx5@gmail.com> wrote:

Reason I was asking is, I intend to use the 'Ujanja' thing for another purpose, if it works as they keep claiming on radio... :-)

have you tried FOSS, there are several which help in lap top tracking On 08/09/2009, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com> wrote:

Ndungu, when you try ujanja for the service you want to subscribe, let us know of the outcomes. Methinks that advert on radio is just a marketing strategy! On 08/09/2009, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

The 'Ujanja' guys could be skunkworks&skunkettes - I hear its a pretty young outfit [?] I will try and enlist - but I dont know if it can work for my phone...

Haha. The only time you will have a guarantee for getting back your phone is if there is some tiny font somewhere in their contract that says "In the event we do not find it we shall buy you a similar device". Bottom line is that it depends on who stole your phone. If they are wajanja enough, you wont get it back. Thats a guarantee. 2009/9/9 ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>
