Hi Guys, I have noticed that most laptops now ( seen in HP & IBM) come with SIM slots. Has anyone tried configuring this to work using local SIM cards in a Windows 7 environment? would really be interested in using it as an alternative to the USB modems like Bambanet. Regards Humphrey.

They call it a WWAN (HSDPA) module usually optional. Mine doesn't work. On Nov 19, 2012 7:15 PM, "Humphrey Kirui" <hkirui@gmail.com> wrote:

The other day I was toying around with a HP Compaq mini and a certain Lenovo (cant remember the brand) They both featured sim card slots but no GSM hardware registered on device manager or lspci and lshw. After opening the machines, I found that both had missing GSM/WWAN modules. Turns out most locally sold machines with sim slots are sold sans the above mentioned modules. Same here, we have four pieces of EliteBook 8540p laptops bought in 2010; none has ever registered the GSM/CDMA modules despite what the HP site claims.

WWAN module is an optional feature. You can order it during purchase (yes, you must always try to configure the machine you buy according to your needs!) or after purchase. It is NEVER included by default, even though the SIM card slot is built-in to the machine. That's my experience. On Tue, Nov 20, 2012 at 12:58 AM, Tony Likhanga <tlikhanga@gmail.com> wrote:

You guys mentioned attaching an internal modem, WWAN module.. Would help if I could visually verify these. On the application side, it seems HP teams with MSPs like verizon etc to avail drivers and enable the WWAN module. I would have thought that the next step after slotting in the SIM would be generic WWAN driver installation followed by some sort of modem configuration. Rgds. If the WWAN module is present, I am 99% sure Windows would show it under Device Manager, either as a known or unknown device. Most likely the former, if you are running Win7.
On the application side, it seems HP teams with MSPs like verizon etc to avail drivers and enable the WWAN module.
Did you check for the drivers from www.hp.com? I think I have seen them there. About the device being locked to MSPs, that I cannot comment on. Would be quite daft of HP or any other manufacturer to do this, because they aren't building these laptops for the likes of Verizon...

Well, if the drivers and the dashboard interface give that, I still don't see how you can fail to create a network with APN of your choice. I have a Dell Latitude with the SIM card slot, but no WWAN module so I can't test this. I should go looking for WWAN card, but a USB dongle is way cheaper. Oh, and you can as well use your Android phone as an AP, which beats the price of the WWAN! -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler.

You're right Wash: Not worth the hack but even more I doubt local MSPs have WWAN modems on sale. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-0yAVYfO18 Thanks for the pointers though. Rgds. Humphrey. On Tue, Nov 20, 2012 at 2:33 PM, Humphrey Kirui <hkirui@gmail.com> wrote:
