Incidentally, its seems there has been a drastic change in Orange 3G+ (EVDO CDMA), or maybe its just me, speeds and signals quality have more than doubled in my area. As for Airtel, maybe they are still re organizing

I was really interested in hearing about the Airtel 3G, and I think if someone wanted to talk about the Orange 3G+, then another thread for that discussion would be very ok - not to suppress anyone's right to talk, but just to keep threads clean. Maybe another thread to compare the offerings would also be interesting :-) Sorry to anyone if I appeared like wielding a 'big stick' ./Ok3ch On Mon, Mar 7, 2011 at 11:19 AM, African Pro Soccer <info@africanprosoccer.com> wrote:

As for Airtel, the reason they are not on the comparison is that the speeds too slow to speed test. * Kioko runs and hides *

Have seen Airtel 3G show up near Westlands but couldn't get to connect. Wasn't the service to launch in the first quarter of this year? 2011/3/7 Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com>

Kevin, Why don't you guys stick with one technology? Either go CDMA or GSM.

Well, they decided to go GSM, but they have to continue supporting CDMA....

Well, the thing with supporting CDMA and going GSM is that it is like you are running 2 networks. It is costly and makes no sense, they need to just stop supporting CDMA all together. Just wake up one day and dismantle the infrastructure. I am not aware of any other country running a similar system. This may have been OK when they were a state monopoly funded by the Government, but they just need to change now and stop complaining about other players. They need to improve their service levels, and they can't do that with all their resources tied to maintaining 2 separate networks. And an expensive terrestrial network, which they have failed to utilize to capture the growing data market. Enough for now.

A couple of networks run CDMA successfully in USA. On Mon, Mar 7, 2011 at 5:28 PM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

They need to improve their service levels, and they can't do that with all their resources tied to maintaining 2 separate networks. And an expensive terrestrial network, which they have failed to utilize to capture the growing data market.
Enough for now.

Well, I on the CDMA EVDO ZTE AC2726, coverage in my area was not good and I once complained to Ghossein who send in some engineers to do test. They did tests and the speeds were *usable* but not as fast as I could get in other areas. However a couple of weeks ago, the services slowed down again to the point I switched to Safaricom 3G. However, over the weekend, I realized that speed and coverage had vastly improved out of the blue. Mind you I went back to test Orange after I found Safaricom is configured in such a way that a 6 MB *upload* kept dropping at 10%. So am not sure what Orange did, but its working on CDMA. As for Airtel, my line still has 800 MB for the last 6 months, unusable at their current speeds.

Mutumah, 3G on EvDO or GSM? And now that you have spoken, why is it that 3G+ speeds have become so bad? On Mon, Mar 7, 2011 at 17:06, kevin mutumah <kkmtumah@gmail.com> wrote:

Hello Kevin, Interesting that in some places speeds are doubling yet in Westlands on GSM you can only get plain old GPRS in some places. You cant get EDGE. There was a time in the same place you could get 3G but I guess it was turned off. Now the speeds are terribly slow on GPRS. It appears that the dramatic speed changes I was seeing in Orange 3G + were a false alarm and now are back to sub- zero, with even Airtel with its sub 10 KiB/s speeds outdoing them. Meanwhile, if you are not on Twitter, you missed Kenyans coming up with #AirtelKeExcuses for lack of 3G, the best been they were waiting to buy it second hand from Safaricom
