Re: [Skunkworks] Reconstitution of the Mailing List

Hi Collins, The number has reached 100 already. There are some who are sending the unsubscription notice they received to the list-owner! Sijui tufunge subscription sasa, sababu hawa 100 wametoshia, ndio lurkers wasikunje tena?? :-) On 13 January 2017 at 09:27, Collins Areba <arebacollins@gmail.com> wrote:

Hello Skunkers,
I intend to reconstitute the mailing list by tomorrow.
What this means is that I am going to UNSUBSCRIBE everyone then whoever wants to join can subscribe again.
At the moment, the mailing list has got *1931 *which IMHO doesn't make sense.
root@lists:~# /var/lib/mailman/bin/list_members skunkworks | wc -l 1931
So, after this message completes sending to the 1931 addresses, you will all receive an UNSUBSCRIBE notification.
Do the necessary once you receive that.
The link to SUBSCRIBE is *http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks <http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks>*
I hope no one feels annoyed by this decision (unilateral as it is). Surely, where are the 1,931 members??? I think the active ones are less than 50. The lurkers can't be allowed to be several hundreds, ama?

Hey Washington, To be honest I don't see what the problem is about having lurkers because for the longest time skunkworks has been a great source of information and most people have subscribed to have access to it. As long as we don't have trolling and/or bullying I think it's ok having a lot of people because that diversity is what makes it work. Not everyone can contribute all the time but occasionally there will be an opportunity to say something, and not just for the sake of it. I echo Ben's sentiments. I once got a very brilliant intern from here who had been a lurker and just came across the words 'I could consider interns' for Techweez. What you did could easily be added an -ism or another. Regards, Martin Gicheru Sent on the run. The lurkers aspect is not that serious. Every list has some. But having over 1,500 lurkers is a concern for sure. The server has limited resources in terms of bandwidth. Imagine if the admins were to allow a post with a 1MB attachment. That is how much bandwidth used for 'readers' who are unlikely to collaborate again? Mailing lists are meant for collaboration. When lurkers outnumber the real collaborators, I kinda find it odd. But it's okay! Trolls/bullies are the easiest to take care of so I don't mind that. However, how do you get diversity from 'silent contributors'?? I am not being rigid. Actually, I stored the whole list of subscribers before I unsubscribed everyone so it's trivial to return it to that status it was in before, but given how long skunkworks has been in existence, I just thought maybe it makes sense to reconstitute. And such re-constitutions do happen .. PS: Gicheru - point noted. As a matter of fact, I have myself added a few lurkers who are around to sniff for opportunities like you offered.
