@Laura, No need to get defensive. Factory unlock only apply to phones shipped from Apple already unlock. The fact that you have to unlock means that it can't be factory unlock. What you do is simply called 'white-listing' where the IMEI of the phone is added to a list of unlocked devices maintained by Apple, the user syncs with iTunes and the phone is unlocked for use by any other carrier.

If by any chance you get a phone which was reported stolen from AT&T network, then you will not be able to unlock it. My Nokia 3310 is already factory unlocked...I don't like those high end expensive phones because when they fall, they break...but my 3310 has been falling since 2002 and it is still going strong...no complaints so far... Timo.
