Re: [Skunkworks] Orange Bundle vs Speed

Jangita, Speed does not change. It only has an upper limit that is 3.1MBytesps(Good luck getting that unless you are in an EVDO area and are the only user in the cell tower) however what makes the bundle slow sometimes is the traffic in the cell tower in which you are. For example westlands, parklands, CBD on all days except Sundays, Nairobi west and south c have high number of users so expect an average of 128Kbytes. Reasonable enough unless you are a heavy heavy user or have a hangover from broadband abroad- that's a joke!. Worst case scenario you'll be able to get 32-64Kbytes per second. Workable considering where we are coming from in the Kenya data market Note that I insist on using bytes as a full word since a certain company uses Bits where bytes would do much better. Another thing to note is that the advertised speeds/bandwidth are max bit rate and not guaranteed bit rate. Bernard On Sun, Oct 3, 2010 at 1:20 PM, Joel Musungu <nabiimfalme@gmail.com> wrote:

Bernard Hey, just took me 45 minutes to download 14MB ...

45 minutes? Are you on throttled bandwidth? What was the in-bundle bandwidth? Bernard On Sun, Oct 3, 2010 at 1:48 PM, Jangita <jangita@jangita.com> wrote:

Thanks Joel, but i just got an email saying that if its unlimited then speed is capped to some very low value; whereas the other bundles are much faster and are comparable to safaricom's 3G I am in Karen and accessing the internet now; just put the weekly unlimited bundle and the speeds are like (and slightly slower than) zain's EDGE, anything i'm not doing correctly? Anyone know what the theoretical limit of what orange have is? EVDO that is, what throughputs are max? On Sun, Oct 3, 2010 at 3:42 AM, Jangita <jangita@jangita.com> wrote:

@Joel I think you confuse the Byte and bit. B - Byte b - bit M - Mega (1,000,000) Mi - Megabinary (1,048,576) k - kilo (1,000) Ki - kilobinary (1,024) - sometimes wrongly used as K in for example KB - KiloByte EVDO implemented by Orange has a theoretical maximum of 3.1Mb/s roughly equivalent to 378 KiB/s. (3,100,000 / 1024 / 8) 128KiB/s is equivalent to 1Mib/s (128 * 8 = 1024) Data transfer rates are traditionally measured in bits and storage in Bytes. On 10/03/2010 01:20 PM, Joel Musungu wrote:
