So first, Microsoft chases everyone to use licensed Windows....then many people shift to Linux....now they want to develop linux version of their Office product? How about if they just made Windows free like linux and keep everyone using their Office....then again....its about the $! No? Have a wonderful week ahead. Regards

Nice way to send encoded messages... open your terminal and enjoy

The number of enterprises that are ready to pay for Windows makes it worthwhile to keep charging for Windows. It may also be that Office and Windows are being made independent thus allowing Office to pursue cross platform monetization, rather than be used as a sweetener to make your purchase Windows . However, Windows still gets early access to new Office features. On the flipside, it might just be the motivation for the various guys behind FOSS office suits to get serious and come up with a proper Office alternative. IBM was on the way with Lotus Symphony, but guess they gave up, plus it wasn't open, just based on Open Office.

The catch as always, will be that the free product they make will lack some vital add-ons or functionality that will require you to pay in order to use. Consider this a gesture that the Office Product Engineers are really having a hard time keeping up with their Open Office(and the rest) counterparts or something of the sort. Microsoft Office is superior to open office in as far as use and features are concerned. So the Microsoft engineers being threatened by FOSS engineers is not plausible to me. What Kioko says is a more likely scenario with the Office guys thinking it is worthwhile to get linux users who are dissatisfied by the open source alternatives paying for the superior product. We can agree to disagree as to whether Microsoft Engineers are never threatened by FOSS engineers.(Ahem!) Give a small or medium business owner a choice between spending 30K or spending much less for a FOSS alternative(inferior as it may be) - he or she will probably go for the FOSS option given the basic office functions are provided. So.. why would Microsoft "stoop" low to provide value for money when they know alternatives exist for basic office functionality? On 2/10/13, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

I think you mean spending much less on cracked Microsoft Office, cause that's what they do. Yet to come across an office using Open Office, well, say maybe one.

Again, I think most small or medium business unless pitched in remote parts of the country would opt for FOSS in return for peace of mind(*wondering whether every customer walking through the door is a Microsoft Anti-Piracy agent), they probably don't know much about Open Office because the "computer guy" installs cracked versions of Microsoft Office. I personally use OpenOffice just like everyone else back at the office I find it better than msoffice. That said, I suspect ms is only making the Linux version coz they've been pushed by the demand by Android smartphone and tablet users who are growing much faster than their own parallel brand. And now that they're making one for Android they might as well have one for Linux while at it. Android is still a Linux version I guess. Moses. Either you are joking or you have not used Office. To say Office is struggling to keep up with Open Office is preposterous. On Sun, Feb 10, 2013 at 3:44 PM, Patrick Kariuki <patrick.kariuki@gmail.com>wrote:
