Re: [Skunkworks] Digital Migration Questions

What is digital content . It's either in hard or soft copy ... The signal is what matters Sent from my HTC ----- Reply message ----- From: "Mouz via skunkworks" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> To: "Skunkworks Mailing List" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Subject: [Skunkworks] Digital Migration Questions Date: Wed, Feb 25, 2015 17:28 Good People, I had an interesting conversation with some guys about this and couldn't come to an agreement. Please help me understand a few things. Is it safe to conclude it doesn't matter what format the content is generated by K24, KTN,KBC, NTV,etc, what matters is whether the signal distribution is digital or analogue(how it reaches the viewer)? Is there such a thing as 'content in digital format' and 'content in analogue format'? If the answer is 'yes' to the above question, does KTN,NTV and Citizen have 'digital content', how long have they had it in this format and how were they able to broadcast on DSTV and Zuku prior to migration to the 'digital format'? -- ./mouz

Thank you gentlemen, I thought as much! But someone else thought otherwise. On 25 February 2015 at 17:49, olie.ndegwa@gmail.com < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

@Solomon My(layman) reasoning : Tv stations produce the content and give it to the distributors(DSTV,Zuku,PANG,Signet, etc). The distributors then 'convert' it into any format that they need to distribute it on the digital platform(or any other). In this case there was no 'digital' or 'analogue' content, so to speak, just content being transmitted on digital or analogue platforms. My colleagues' reasoning : The TV stations had their content in 'digital' and 'analogue' formats, and they started generating the 'digital' content around 2007 and that is why they were able to broadcast on the DSTV platform. My colleagues also argue KTN specifically had both analogue and digital content which they were giving to DSTV,Zuku,StarTimes, etc for onward transmission. In addition, when the Government switched off their analogue transmission, the three TV stations stopped giving their 'digital' content to the distributors for onward digital distribution. We argued for about 30 minutes and never got to agree, instead we opted for everyone to remain with their own version of the story! :) On 25 February 2015 at 18:21, Solomon Mbũrũ Kamau <solo.mburu@gmail.com> wrote:

Mouz,
As far as I know, the format used when recording any video is different from the broadcast one. Recording is done in Pal, NTSC, High Definition (HD) etc. This is akin to saving a document in .doc, .rtf, etc. How the saved document gets to it's final destination is up to the sender to decide but it has nothing to do with how the document was stored.
Make any sense?
Mutinda.

encoding and decoding is what was left out, that is what determines how the data in this case is sent and recovered respectively. R D On Feb 26, 2015 12:09 PM, "Mouz via skunkworks" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:
