Am looking to subscribe to home internet from either AK(canopy) or Safaricom(Wimax) Options available are:
256/512 Kbps AK 512/512 Kbps or 1/1Meg Safaricom.
From experience which company would prefer? Why?

In that case, I am undecided. I have used Safaricom WiMAX for Int'l VoIP (VPN Tunnel), and problems are a few times only and they are responsive. I have also used AK's canopy for a long time until they moved me to Fiber. Problems used to occur with BSes, but that is normal. Orange severely cap you if you exceed fair usage policy. Airtel have a larger allowance, but can't remember their speed allowances. Orange CDMA doesnt have fair usage policy caps but quality may vary. I also think they have a larger KSh. 5000 unlimited bundle. That is if you plan to use mobile.
