Hi y'all, Does anyone know where to play computer games within Nairobi? Not Cyber Cafes, but centers dedicated exclusively to playing computer games. The only one I know of is at Campus House, opposite Central Police station. You guys know any other? Thanks. -- "We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.”

Anyone ???

Strictly computer games or video games in general? On Thu, Nov 25, 2010 at 12:23 PM, Frankline <fraogongi@gmail.com> wrote:

I think in Diamond Plaza there is one such place (in the basement) but they only offer console games. (I last visited the place a year ago so it may not be there anymore...) I also know of several others (including one that I founded) but they've since shut down. Avenue House top floor, also doubles up as a joint for movies of questionable legality. When i passed there ages ago, they had these huge screens with consoles, plus they offered related services, e.g. 'chipping' a PSP. On Thu, Nov 25, 2010 at 1:57 PM, Antony Mwai <antonymwai@gmail.com> wrote:

I shut down shop because I had started in a residential area (and right after high school). The problem was that: a) The revenues had sort of hit a plateau. This is either due to bad management by me, or the fact that it was in a residential area and the number of people who could come was limited more than it would be in a less residential area b) I had to go to uni :P However, I do think it is a viable business but it would take a real gamer to run it successful. I find people who do not love games run these kinds of businesses a little "stupidly". @Clair there is a robust (and developing) gamer community in Nairobi. We've been growing and regularly host LAN parties where people game almost all night. You can find us with ease here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=8878816793 <http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=8878816793>This Saturday night we'll be at the iHub for an all night LAN (perhaps you can come see what gamers look like :P). I'm not sure whether the event is invite-only, however.
From my experience, most gamers are hardware nuts and have impressive rigs at home. I'm pretty sure if you engage with the gamer community and maybe host a few LAN parties, you might get some business by tapping into a relatively unserved niche. For example, I'm certain I'd love the opportunity to do some light gaming with friends in town. because normally when we want to game people have to carry our hardware around.
If you ask me, it is something worth looking into. In my opinion, this would make a nice (low level) gaming machine: - A nice versatile motherboard e.g. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135075 - 1.5 GB RAM - At least a dual core processor - A nice relatively cheap graphics card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102907 - Remember that AMD almost always gives better value for money Kelvin www.likechapaa.com <http://www.dukapress.com>www.dukapress.org -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We help make your website a success. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Fri, Nov 26, 2010 at 2:14 PM, Claire Njoki <clairenjoki@gmail.com> wrote:

I think this is a huge unexploited mine of gold if one really puts his mind and energy into it. There are a lot of serious hard core gamers out there. The challenge is to make it worthwhile for the gamer to get involved. These guys tend to spend large amounts of time playing games, often in the excess of two or three hours a day. They'll sometimes often seek out obscure and older games, based on word of mouth or positive critical reception. Hardcore gamers put good gameplay above all else, and don't mind if a good game has poor (or even nonexistent) graphics, sound, characters and plot. (I know I would :-D ) Currently in Nairobi, I can't say this has really been exploited, and if one really decides to go for it, who knows ... When I say big I don't mean merely 5 or 10 consoles. Think of 30 and above in a good location within the CBD. Any takers ???

@Frankline VERY well put! I've been planning to do something of that sort for years now..... @joram, yes, I have a new cyber in the CBD.
So, gamers, what do I need? Just a PC and internet connection?
Also, since I am in the CBD, will I get any gamers?
And also, won't I be promoting truancy? I mean baba watoto is supposed to be balancing his bosses accounts but he is in my cyber playing games?
I must admit, I do not know any gamers...I do not even know how they look like...I suspect that they have tattoos and weird clothes and talk in binary e.g. 1001001000110100100110
Sorry if there are any gamers here;-) It's just that I have no clue of what I am even talking about.

What are minimum hardware specs for comfortably playing some of those games I hear gamers talk about (warcraft, half life, et. al.)?
Also, does one need to be connected to the net? or one can play them offline.

I shut down shop because I had started in a residential area (and right after high school). The problem was that: a) The revenues had sort of hit a plateau. This is either due to bad management by me, or the fact that it was in a residential area and the number of people who could come was limited more than it would be in a less residential area b) I had to go to uni :P
However, I do think it is a viable business but it would take a real gamer to run it successful. I find people who do not love games run these kinds of businesses a little "stupidly".

As a former serious gamer, I'd like to add my view. @Kelvin, AMD kitu gani? :-))) Talk about water cooled cards ama processors or over-clocking, then the nearest CPU alone would cost about 1000USD. Standalone is fine and what about the billing system, insert coins or buy token credit and manage prepaid accounts? And serious wear and tear to controllers. On my recent trip, I ended up in a bowling site where the most busiest game was "air hockey" which is pretty interesting. The arcade had games from sega, nintendo. Each of these with full consoles like bikers, guns, helipads etc cost much and are customised like Slot machines. Who can or will maintain these with parts? I see a simple solution : LAN Networked action PC games or WAN strategy games. Breakdown : 1) Central Server capable of how many active sessions = RAM, HDD, CPU = ? 2) Player Controllers = JoySticks or Pads = ? 3) Network = ? 4) How many games can be played = ? 5) Billing management = ? Startup Costs = Not less than 10,000usd? Operating Costs = The usual Profitability = How much to charge per player versues fixed costs of rent, maintainence, kplc, backup power, arcade manager ? Lets punch in these figures for @DJ Claire, hopefully the process can be understood. Rgds. :-)
