Hey guys, I'm facing a rather unique problem with two HP pavilion d5 laptops they are randomly shutting down, the two laptops are on different OS platforms so it does not appear to be an OS related issue. Anyone who can advice how I can go about this and what could be causing this?oh and its not an overheating problem as well. Regards, John.

Are you using them on a domain network? Where did you purchase them and are they still on warranty? Alvin On 7/2/09, john maina <mwasjunior@gmail.com> wrote:

@jason: They are not on a domain network and yes they are still under warranty @dennis: One is on windows vista business, one is on windows 7pro the shutdown is brutally random and doesn't seem to be activated by any particular application and there is no error message whatsoever.

my main suspicion is a virus, given that both are windows machines. you will have to format and reinstall on at least one drive, then immediately Install an antivirus and updates. DO NOT double click on any other drives before installing an AV, use the folders explorers method instead to access driver. KAV or Mcafee(this works) with recent updates should work. Remember to show hidden files and system files, which the virus hides under. On 02/07/2009, john maina <mwasjunior@gmail.com> wrote:

@denno, virus developers have beaten us in 'safe' use of Explorer to view a directory. Just today i came across a virus' autorun.inf file whose script included a line to execute a .exe virus when 'explore' is used. My advice would be to get a linux liveCD and sweep all visible viruses or their more easily identifiable AutoRun.inf files- they are useless without these. You can then do the rest as adviced by Dr Kioko. On 7/2/09, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Av not used vista that much and never used windows 7. Having said that, can u check event viewer (just after restart) for the last error before shutdown or the first error msgs after restart. In xp it wil be under system category of errors. It might giv u some pointers. About viruses, av posted a thread on how to get some of those annoying ones On 7/2/09, nyarotho kennedy <kenyarotho@gmail.com> wrote:

I bought a Toshiba 17" desktop replacement laptop at Neptune in 2008 and had the same problem. I bought the machine for 86k and when I had enough of it, I got a very good friend who gave me 72k and I just got over it. That said. I formatted the laptop, Re-installed evrything but there was just no solution. I think it was a deep problem and I have not known what was happening. But now I suspect that it was the Vista. The friend downgraded it to XP Pro and I had Vista Business. I couldnt downgrade it because I just love Vista. I first feared going to the friend's shop lest I be asked what the problem with the laptop wasbut now I realise that it might have been the OS On Fri, Jul 3, 2009 at 4:18 AM, Mr. Lawi <mail2lawi@gmail.com> wrote:

John, beware of the entertainment laptops such as the HP DVs. be sure you have all the necessary arsenal before jumping in to re-install. Reason being that they have SATA drives that are unfriendly to OS installation. You may need to have a specific driver to enable you turn off/on the AHCI in the BIOS. Otherwise you may end up with that error that goes something like " Hard drive cannot be found" just thought i should warn you, hoping you did not have to resort to it already..
