I bought a Toshiba 17" desktop replacement laptop at Neptune in 2008 and had the same problem. I bought the machine for 86k and when I had enough of it, I got a very good friend who gave me 72k and I just got over it.
Av not used vista that much and never used windows 7. Having said
that, can u check event viewer (just after restart) for the last error
before shutdown or the first error msgs after restart. In xp it wil be
under system category of errors.
It might giv u some pointers.
About viruses, av posted a thread on how to get some of those annoying ones
