Hi guys and gals, Bad start to the long weekend. My HP Pavilion DV6000 just died. I last used it two nights ago and it was fine. When I power on, the LEDs come on but it doesn't attempt to boot, hard drive stays strangely quiet, and the display doesn't seem to get powered. I've tried with an external display as well. I've removed the HDD and backed up my important stuff to another machine. Looks like a HW problem but I don't think it's the mobo. Have tried the memory as well, no joy. Correction guyz, most of the dv6000 machines being sold locally are refurbished (if your machines serial num has this bit "...R#..." Then its even worse if urs has an nvidia graphics card coz they been known to have issues. Apparently the card gets fried or sth like that. Daniel, could you please give more facts about the nvidia graphics card issue? I have been shortlisting my soon to be laptop based primarily on the graphics card. And Nvidia comes highly recommended. Its sth to do with the way the laptop is designed. The graphics card is located directly above the processor and the heat emanating from the processor fries it. BTW most of the machines with nvidia cards also have AMD processors. Its a known issue, jst check most dv6000 user forums and you will find out. Problem usually starts with a short beep followed by two long beeps when you boot the machine but the display jst remains blank. I have another office-type laptop, I've not used this machine heavily - I use it as it was intended to be used. Mainly music, photos, movies...and not every other day. Just once in a while.
I know the specs are super but you will be buying adaptors every 2-3 months (esp the cheap ones in town @ 4k) .......Go for Commercial laptops!!!!
I've never had issues with it, not even with the adaptors, except for some time I applied an update from HP and the remote stopped working...so I rolled back. Just noticed something ....it's not sending power to the hard drive either - just as with the display - but is powering the DVD-RW. Just noticed something ....it's not sending power to the hard drive either - just as with the display - but is powering the DVD-RW.

Hi Alvin, it think a buyer's decision is based on what they can afford versus performance and other factors. While there are plenty of higher end models, many times it comes down to finances and costs. A classic example is what I updated recently. http://www.chekelea.com/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=143 Here is a laptop that has formula one specs like carbon fiber case etc. But most of the times, some don't need that top performance for spreadsheets, emails, script work etc. When graphics/video are involved, then the situation changes. Even the person who does such work knows the lower end models will not perform or hamper their work abilities.

This sounds like mere marketing talk to me. Please give us technical reasons for why entertainment laptops "are meant to run 5-7 hours a day", and don't just say "they're meant to". Please feel free to give details specific to this HP Pavilion. Otherwise, you simply sound like you're trying to sell us the more expensive "business" laptops.
