Project Management Companies & PMI Certification

Hey, Anyone knows local companies where one can intern as a junior project manager? What are the requirements? Are their colleges where one can get the PMI certification? Cheers! -- Douglas Ogeto douglas.ogeto@gmail.com

For PMP certification, the first step would be to register with the PMI. Costs around 130 usd. Check pmi.org for more details. Requirements to sit for PMP certification include experience as a project manager (measured in hours), a minimum no of hours in a class among others. PMP.org will have more details. It was my wish to facilitate a PMP training for Skunks this coming year - with an accredited trainer. Details will be forthcoming :) On 12/28/10, Douglas Ogeto <douglas.ogeto@gmail.com> wrote:

@All, What are the possibilities of getting a project job once I attain this kind of certification? Bearing in mind am just a fresh graduate.

I look at project management as a tool...not a serious career.Everyone one time or another has to use some project management skills. On Mon, Jan 10, 2011 at 12:33 AM, Douglas Ogeto <douglas.ogeto@gmail.com>wrote:

McDee, What are you y'all talking about? Project management is a serious discipline and a career like any other I work for a Telco and over and above PMI/PMP we have three additional internal certifications based on actual project experience. Everything every organization does is a project and this is a formalized discipline from Banking, to Insurance to Manufacturing. Here's my recommendation, instead of doing the certification first, get a PM job and do the certification and not the other way round. This is not Cisco or MCSE, you have to have hands on experience. Look for a preparation center preferably in Dubai/SA for the weeks running to the exam and pay for it. My thoughts Kiania D. McDonald, not necessarily. Of course it pays for a PM to be an SME (Subject Matter Expert) in the project he/she is leading but from experience, thats not necessary. As a PM you must manage the resources that actually get the work done. And Kiania was spot on, before you get certified as a PMP you must have enough PM hours. What most people do is first to get the PM training, (takes like 1 week), to get the PM knowledge and then apply work on a project. Once you have gathered enough hours on a project then you can get the certification. On Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 8:14 AM, Joseph McDonald <mcdonaldoj@gmail.com>wrote:

I agree with Lawi, You do not need to be an expert in an area to be a project manager. I have a partner consultant who is so good in project management he runs complex IT projects and has no training whatsoever in IT. Project management is about managing the resources and making sure you deliver to clients in time and within defined specifications(quality) On Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 12:08 PM, Mr. Lawi <mail2lawi@gmail.com> wrote:

Of course it pays for a PM to be an SME (Subject Matter Expert) in the project he/she is leading but from experience, thats not necessary.
As a PM you must manage the resources that actually get the work done.
And Kiania was spot on, before you get certified as a PMP you must have enough PM hours. What most people do is first to get the PM training, (takes like 1 week), to get the PM knowledge and then apply work on a project.
Once you have gathered enough hours on a project then you can get the certification.

@ Lawi & Kiania, So say I identify a "job"/job that entails using different skills set & people and I get the work done with proof to show I spearheaded the project, can I put this under my "belt" as a portfolio thus gain for the hours needed?
