McDonald, not necessarily.
Of course it pays for a PM to be an SME (Subject Matter Expert) in the project he/she is leading but from experience, thats not necessary.
As a PM you must manage the resources that actually get the work done.
And Kiania was spot on, before you get certified as a PMP you must have enough PM hours. What most people do is first to get the PM training, (takes like 1 week), to get the PM knowledge and then apply work on a project.
Once you have gathered enough hours on a project then you can get the certification.
Am sorry it came out badly what I meant,is you need other skills to compliment the Project Management skills.e.g If you are a project manager,in IT ....it means you must have the IT skills first, then project management will be an added advantage.
I hope its clearer now,i did not mean to discourage those, who are doing project management...On Mon, Jan 10, 2011 at 8:20 AM, David Kiania | Asentric Consulting Ltd <kianiadee@gmail.com> wrote:
McDee,
What are you y'all talking about? Project management is a serious
discipline and a career like any other I work for a Telco and over and
above PMI/PMP we have three additional internal certifications based
on actual project experience.
Everything every organization does is a project and this is a
formalized discipline from Banking, to Insurance to Manufacturing.
Here's my recommendation, instead of doing the certification first,
get a PM job and do the certification and not the other way round.
This is not Cisco or MCSE, you have to have hands on experience.
Look for a preparation center preferably in Dubai/SA for the weeks
running to the exam and pay for it.
