NAIROBITECH: IBM MOVES INTO JOGOO HOUSE - WILL RUN NATIONAL SECURITY DATABASES

Any fan of the tv series 'Person of Interest' would says , "You are being watched. The Kenyan government has a secret system: a machine that spies on you every hour of every day. I know, because IBM built it. They designed the machine to detect acts of terror, but it sees everything. Violent crimes involving ordinary people; people like you. Any crime the government considered relevant" http://nairobitech.blogspot.com/2015/01/ibm-moves-into-jogoo-house-will-run....

Is this really a secret system? and does it spy by itself.. or just provision of data analytics..? On Thu, Jan 15, 2015 at 8:52 PM, Mouz via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

<CrazyConspiracyMode> In light of the Snowden leaks, highlighting the "close" relationship between US intelligence and US based IT vendors like IBM, it does not look like a wise move to place such a system, assuming it works, in the hands of IBM. Couple this system with IBM's access to MPESA, and other telco operators data centers, and then assuming IBM builds and operates a traffic management system, IBM (and the US) becomes very well positioned to access, control and monitor critical parts of Kenya's physical, financial and telecommunications infrastructure and systems for years to come. Hell IBM (USA govt) can cripple Kenya at will. Same applies to China, with its control and domination of Kenya's, and Africa's) communications infrastructure (mobile and landline). Then again, we are a small country, so I guess it doesn't matter. It just makes me feel a bit naked, as an ordinary mwananchi in this small corner of the world. </CrazyConspiracyMode> On Tue, Jan 20, 2015 at 10:33 PM, Andrew Nduati via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

@Andrew <CrazyConspiracyMode> In the 21st Century it's not a matter of whether foreign companies have access to our data, but rather which foreign company and their country of origin and what they will do with that data! We are not yet(and we may never be) at that point where we build our own hardware and software that controls access to this data! Oh, I'm sending this mail via Google's servers! :) </CrazyConspiracyMode> On 21 January 2015 at 04:04, Timothy Yegon via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

I have more faith in IBM than in China based systems....which is where we have been headed. What do you think the 72 chinese who we will send back 1st class were here doing? Plus i am sure we will build capacity to eventually take over IBM systems, after all they are coded in english, even if it takes 10 years On Wed, Jan 21, 2015 at 9:19 AM, Mouz via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

I think we overestimate how much control we have over these systems. If its not built here by our armed forces or a firm with such leanings or loyalties then we have zero control as to what it does. Doesn't matter whether it is Chinese, Rwandan, American or Croatian. No control in developing = no control in usage. Mouz.. lets not get ahead of ourselves in thought. Kenya does not have the capacity to manufacture the kind of infrastructure IBM is offering (If indeed it has moved to Jogoo House - if it has, *hat tip - you are very connected and informed :-) ), what is has is a bunch of patriotic engineers (Cryptographers/Mathematicians, Electrical Engineers and Computer Scientists) who can verify if the infrastructure is secure and robust enough to get the job done. Perhaps you can enlighten us more on potential back doors that can be found in OS's, firmware or hardware that Jogoo House should watch out for.
