Final Call - Innovators demonstrations

Greetings skunk(ette)s, As earlier mentioned, this will be held next Thursday (10th Dec) thus tomorrow at noon I shall close the 'registrations.' Many thanks to all that have reserved their slots and sent me .pdf briefs of their intended showcase solutions. ( Please carry your own laptops(There will be free BROADBAND WiFi :~) Much appreciated PS Ndemo (Ministry of Information and Communications) for facilitating this international business interaction. @Alex, I don't believe you ! :-) I have on at least 2 threads tried to get some response from our local devs but so far none. Even the Nokia awards thread openly invited any local dev to contribute what they did for Nokia. I'm considering writing to Nokia themselves to find out what KE submitted to them as apps. I'm also sure that many other african countries would be asking the same questions I am. Since you have had success with the somewhat closed group who may need to learn more about communication skills, kindly let us listers know what you managed to get lined up for the event. I've had no success with any feedbacks from any individual regarding Telco apps but am inclined to think that app devs exists solely in our imaginations. Pls correct as necessary. -- ( the rise of Yoda! Ready are you? What know you of ready? For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi... )

@Aki The absence of proof is not proof of absence
Strictly logically: true. But life isn't strictly logical, heck it isn't even logical. The absence of proof means something, and whatever it means doesn't seem too good. I share aki's frustration with the lack of co-operation (at all levels). I don't know what will break this vicious cycle, but it has to be broken if anything meaningful is to happen. It could be a really simple reason, like the developers don't want to reveal what they are working on, for as many or as little reasons as they may have, or for the cyclical reason that they wish not to reveal what they are working on because they wish not to reveal what they are working on, and do they have not the right to do that? It says that maybe the South African were better organized. Or maybe that South Africa is a big country that is very advanced and that it has many developers. Or may it just means nothing.

How do you explain Mauritius? Rwanda? India? End of day, it's initiative. If not careful, it may end up being a case of the Emperor's new clothes with .ke devs... On Wed, Dec 9, 2009 at 10:19 AM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

@Peter, I respect and understand about development secrecy which is absolutely perfect. BUT to understand a problem is to understand the solution. Let us not mix words. There is a big difference between dev secrecy and open dev discussions. And clearly we dont have devs, that much I know by now. For me the interesting part about the Nokia event was to research as how do we compare to others, where we lack, where our strengths are and finally where are we heading? So if you know, please list the apps from KE or even Alex can list the Apps that are to be shown to Telcos. Also BTW, did anyone notice that the top 10 Nokia challenge winners were not mpesa based apps! We are being told something here, we should take it further. :-) -- ( the rise of Yoda! Ready are you? What know you of ready? For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi... )

Since you have had success with the somewhat closed group who may need to learn more about communication skills, kindly let us listers know what you managed to get lined up for the event. I've had no success with any feedbacks from any individual regarding Telco apps

How many others have suffered "The excruciating pain of being a Kenyan Coder"? http://www.iddsalim.com/blog/category/sembuse/

Interesting post, and not surprising at all (unfortunately). Safaricom in particular always crops up as a culprit. Either they simply have bad press with developers (I've heard a million stories), or they really are crooks. Offshore is better. Why Non-Kenyans? Because there are no real investors in
Kenya. We have not met someone who can put USD 100k in faith and equity on an IT startup. Kenyans have no faith. All we have met are people who want to put KSHS 1M for 80% ownership of your solution and your life. Remember it is Software. Not Bread.
How do people deal with this reality? Is that why it is so difficult for listers to get together and do something meaningful? Realistically, what is the future of any publicly discussed (on this list), for-profit ventures? Maybe that's why the traffic-system people are so secretive about their work, which I understand it meant to be commercial? Potential solution: give the product away for free (since you can't fairly compete anyway) and offer superior services. Sell the brand (either your product/company brand or your personal brand as a consultant). Selling IT products, in Kenya it seems, is so challenging for SMEs. In the same way that Alex and the Consumers association regularly give shit to MJ and company, is there a comparable Developers association that can aggregate and channel developers grief? Would that be a much more effective strategy at getting together? Alex, what has your experience been with the Consumers association?
