Your friend is already being picky, he's sure going to have it rough then. There is no real formula, it just takes a bit of wits, luck and thinking outside the box. If the worst comes to worst, some of these menial jobs can get him into the right doors where he will be in a better position to surprise the suits on his IT skills. I have learned from experience never to despise those menial jobs. But one thing he can get used to is craigslist http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites/ good for getting local jobs (be careful of scams). I personally have found quite a handful of side jobs there.
