Is there a good reason why Orange Telecom (what is the name?) is doing NAT for 3G users or maybe I am just being silly? I am looking at the status of my router - I use a dongle on a D-Link DIR-825 - and my WAN IP is 10.53.26.48. However, whatismyip.com tells me that my IP address is 212.49.88.108. Does this mean some MNOs don't have a large enough IP space to assign public IPs to subscribers? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I can't hear you -- I'm using the scrambler.

@Wash, On a different note, what is your experience with Orange especially their 'unlimited plan'? About the NAT issue, maybe they just don't have the public IP space, or they are doing this so that they can sniff on your traffic with deep-packet inspection more effectively. Orders from above. But I am sure they can do this without NAT. Or maybe it is just a temporary solution as they work on their systems. Anyway, since the landing of Orange owned LION2 cable, has anyone noticed any difference using the Orange network?

Natting is necessary for administrative reasons like said above sniffing. I noticed most MNOs block standard VPN connections when using Edge/3G networks. You need to understand the core functions of Mobile networks is to provide voice services and Data comes later so providing dedicated data services with static or dynamic public IPs is not a priority. NAT is not and has never been a security against sniffing or otherwise. Nat was a bandaid to extend the ipv4 address space, then people decided it was "safe" due to obscurity but I think that's just laziness and quite a number of people/companies have paid for it. Safaricom as far as I know gives each and every user a public ip securely. Sent from my iPad On 5 Sep 2012, at 12:35, Job Muriuki <muriukin@gmail.com> wrote:

@Philip, I am a dedicated Safaricom 3G user:-) I only use Orange once in a blue moon - for testing - which doesn't call for taking any plans. I simply buy a bundle and go! On Wed, Sep 5, 2012 at 9:23 AM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

Might be a case of limitation on public IPv4 addresses. Can't imagine there is any more SPs still tied to the notion of enforcing security by hiding devices behind NAT. Again, SP end kind of NAT was used to ensure reliance on SP, old school again, as it made it difficult to host any web services within the local environment if only a private IP addresses were used. IPv4 if needed ie if 'reason for need' can be shown is still available at afrinic. The responsible thing to do if you are a service provider is acquire the resource especially if someone is kind enough to keep it aside for you in the face of an uncertain future. In this case orange/airtel/yu/safaricom should definately get enough to activate their projected peak PDP contexts * 3 to factor in growth for about 3 - 4 yrs when we have large scale ipv6 content available.
