[OFF-TOPIC] Car importation in Kenya question

This is off topic so bear with me. Quick question: How are the year and months for cars to be imported calculated? Currently, Kenya allows cars <= 7 years to be imported to Kenya. Say we are currently in February 2014. Does it mean that I can only import cars registered after March 2007, or a car registered in January 2007 can also be imported? Will it be allowed at the port? Please shed some light into this, regarding how a car's registration/manufactured month affects what cars can be imported to Kenya. I'm all new to this :-) Thank you in advance.

I would use a 'professional' importer for this stuff. Even then the odds of something like the stereo going 'missing' in transit are high - I can only imagine how stressful this would be doing it the first time. -- Kili - Cloud for Africa: kili.io Musings: twitter.com/varud <https://twitter.com/varud> More Musings: varud.com About Adam: www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Mon, Feb 24, 2014 at 10:15 AM, Jayden Brayden <jaybrayden@gmail.com>wrote:

Hi I do car imports on behalf and for the little experience i have, if say you import a car manufactured/first registered 2007, March you will pay duty the same as a 2008 Manufactures/First Registered, I don't know why they use that matrix but the following site can give you duty estimates What I usually do is delay Shipping to arrive at that particular month also note that some various ports in Mombasa have various clearance dates I know KENCONT For SBT has up to 21 days (Confirm with your clearing agent) Any other Questions I will be glad to respond http://dutycalc.co.ke/ Regards Calvin Omari On Mon, Feb 24, 2014 at 10:15 AM, Jayden Brayden <jaybrayden@gmail.com>wrote:

@Adam, the trick is to know the rules, I have imported over 3 cars in the past year @Jayden also ensure if importing a vehicle in December ensure it does not arrive the next year, you will not be allowed to clear if its past the 7 year threshold Regards On Mon, Feb 24, 2014 at 10:20 AM, Calvin Omari <calvinebarongo@gmail.com>wrote:

It's actually an "8 year old rule" This used to be evaluated based on the date of loading onto the vessel transporting the vehicle; A recent interpretation has shifted this to the actual date the vehicle arrives in Kenya. 1. If the difference in the raw years is under 8 years, you are safe. 2. Once 1 above is met, then consider the months to get the actual exact age. This is what will be subject to the depreciation table used by KRA to determine the duties et al. In short, any vehicle manufactured or first registered in 2007 is eligible for import this year. Tony.

I thought KRA uses the month/year of registeration, rather than the month/year of manufacture in determining the amount of depreciation to charge? On 24 February 2014 10:27, Tony Likhanga <tlikhanga@gmail.com> wrote:

*I thought KRA uses the month/year of registeration, rather than the month/year of manufacture in determining the amount of depreciation to charge?*
That's the most common approach since most imported vehicles are pre-owned. Ever though of how KRA will go about it a if you were to purchase a Bugatti Veyron from a show-room in Europe? Tony.

And so the question still remains, does KRA strictly adhere to the months the car was registered, as in, considering we are in February 2014, can you actually bring a car registered earlier than February 2007 i.e. 2007 January, since if we're going by months alone, that is more than 7 years, or is it that as long as the car was registered in 2007 (regardless of the month) it is still applicable? Jayden, I already answered your query in my initial post. All cars registered in 2007 are eligible for import any date this year. (This applies to a unit registered on 1st Jan as well). Tony.

Thank you Tony. That answers it. On Mon, Feb 24, 2014 at 2:46 PM, Tony Likhanga <tlikhanga@gmail.com> wrote:
