Hi, I am trying to find out if there is a proper/adequate infrastructure for ecommerce in this country. Are there Kenyan ecommerce sites and if so, how do they handle issues relating to electronic payments such as the mode of payment, security etc. How do the companies running the sites collaborate with the financial institutions to receive payments and how are the clients assured of receipt of their purchased goods? Is there appropriate legislation to handle issues arising from this kind of trade. Incase of a problem, are institutions that the customer or the legal entity can consult to resolve these in Kenya. My biggest problem is electronic payments in this discussion. Putting up shopping carts might be easy, but in this beloved country, what electronic payments are possible. Any insight on this topic will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Duggan Kimani

I know there is a company which is working on it with a local bank and plans are at an advanced stage.I cannot go into details because of confidentiality. But you can start a website then you do everything but then it is cash on on delivery. For clients out of town they can pay via mpesa or zap. When such a system as electronic payment is available you will have created trust among your customers and it will be easy to convert them. I have a website, over the last 1 and half years i have managed to get 1000+ clients with very good sales.I have clients outside Nairobi and suprisingly out of the country as well. Thanks On Wed, Jun 3, 2009 at 4:28 PM, Duggan Kim <mdkimani@gmail.com> wrote:

Am curious about this e-commerce. Mpesa should do the trick soon enough if they roll out the pay bill function opened for all bussiness as partner like KPLC and integrate it with e-commerce sites or rather make an online payment division with a online payment menu on the mobile phone for e-commerce sites. if you have a shopping cart and want to pay with mpesa u can either go to the menu and send the money to the e-commerce site account and receive a confirmation code that you will enter in the site and purchase your product or introduce safaricom mpesa api key for e-commerce sites has any one thougth this through i remember we had a thread about this sometyme back and David Mugo mentioned he has a system that does online payments with mpesa. @David does it work? is there a site or company implementing it? my adv to you would be on commodity sale value. If its things like airtime etc, then it makes sense, you financial risk factor is lowered. If higher amounts involved, you are exposing yourself to bigger risk and could run into debt very quickly..keep an watch for this thing. HTHs.

Ok, Ive just launched a website, its called dealcent.com. Am trying out MPesa and Zap, (MPesa enabled for now). Works. Kenyan laws are not E-friendly, thats why theres no investment. On 6/3/09, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Good luck. great to see another site on IT goods up. :-)

I think once the idea is in place, tested and reliable, there are limit less avenues. Im still to add hosting/voip/networking/etc in due course. Anyone thinking of starting an Online dating service? :-) On Thu, Jun 4, 2009 at 11:17 PM, Frankline Chitwa <frank.chitwa@gmail.com>wrote:

still haven't read it but thot the much malaligned media bill had provisions that gave legal safeguards to e-transactions. i think local banks are weak (lacking[?]) in i.t visionaries. co-op, for example, routinely ignores emails sent to them, takes 4 working days to clear local bank transfers, won't bank non-kenyan cheques (eti they would send them abroad and the banks "wouldn't return them and customers would complain"), niendelee ama nisiendelee...
