Re: [Skunkworks] [kictanet] A true innovation?

I think transport should be a service and not a business so to say, as a means of getting the working forces from home to job and back. One thing for certain is that the cost of transport as it lies right now is really high and most of the revenue or cash generated is never taxed enough as a pay back for the heartache we all go through in public transport. In view of moving into the new age i think a system of prepaid card would be the way of reducing the cost of transport per passenger, in this case the bus has a card reader to verify that the card is paid up. The price is fixed so going to westi or ronga or thika would be the same and you could pick any bus. The technology then would be a wireless card reader on the bus buses , a way of you refilling your monthly card either by mpesa or some other way. I cast my vote with you Kris, very well thought out. Best Regards On Mon, Jun 27, 2011 at 11:54 PM, kris njoroge <krsnjo@gmail.com> wrote:

I think the problem with the smart bus is that the government tried to side step the existing public transport systems. The smart buses are too few to actually get any benefit from them. The only way they can achieve this is by implementing this model to every bus/shuttle/matatu on the road the same way they did with seat belts. -Billy 2011/6/28 Moses <mosenetk@gmail.com>

The difference between this system and that of the smart bus - if i remember how the smart bus system works - is that there is no deducting points or card credit for the distance travelled, once the card is paid up you have unlimited travel in the city for a month. The idea is to get all commuters who do the daily commute to buy the card then the revenue is shared to all the players to keep the services running. Actually would be a good way of the govt. if and when they wish to subsidise transport is to give the running company a tax break which they could pass on to the commuters. I think also they would be better placed to organise routes and such for all so you can connect with ease. * If the human brain were so simple that we could understand it, we would be so simple that we couldn't. - Emerson M.
