Futile but brilliant attempt at keeping the rest of the world's nose out of the country's political drama. The Egyptian government must have some techies...

Hadnt thought of it that way, now that we dont know what is going on there, they can do some damage control

@Sheeroh - not necessarily that they have techies, coz all they did is order ISP's to shut down international gateways ./Ok3ch On Fri, Jan 28, 2011 at 11:18 AM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Just called a contact at Vodafone Egypt and asked whether this is true. He was very guarded in his reply - understandably - he said they're having connectivity issues but he can't tell if other companies are experiencing the same. He hung up real quick. Interesting scenario that thrusts Internet Governance into the limelight, the internet has broken down National borders brought about new challenges with regard to governance issues, Egypt has been a major player in Internet governance circles, lets wait and see how the issue is resolved. Seems like its a crisis management best practice, keep everyone else guessing. Remember the media blackout during the smoking out of SLDF in mt. Elgon and during the PEV. Even if how temporary, some of us derive livelihood from the internet. More so, does it mean that the government is allowed to stop us from talking to each other whenever it deems that this is important for it to stay in power, contrary to our wishes?

Did this affect international calls since most are IP based? Regards, Job Njogu Muriuki, Phone: (+254) - 772333075 | 736333075 Skype: heviejob | Yahoo: heviejob Address: 42665 00100 Nrb

This is already in effect in .ke in some way or other here, we have no forums other than the internet to be able to air our views, it would be futile to protest here coz you'll be staring at paid cops and live bullets. Then there's the puppet media. We're already locked in, and we only have the net... So I can bet you that someone high up is already asking how they can do the same in Kenya in the case that they'll need to. On Fri, Jan 28, 2011 at 1:06 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

I'd hate to burst your bubble guys but regime change through mass action, is highly unlikely in Kenya. There are only two potential outlets for such an option - The Kenya Workers Union and Student Bodies - both of which are carefully controlled and monitored by Govt. Political parties (opposition or otherwise) operate along ethnic lines, so support for mass action can turn out to be a disappointment. Internet connectivity was still available even during the fateful post election period. What is enabling North African countries effect regime change through mass action is religion.

While I agree with the sentiment "may this never hapen in .ke ..." perhaps the better question we should be asking ourselves is how should we organise and protect our internet & telecoms infrastructure so that it CANNOT happen in .ke? It's def. worth thinking about.

Can there be a way out of such a situation with the use of individual satelite technologies such as thuraya? I am very sure Egypt has just enlightened governments world wide.

These Governments seriously control any satellite equipment such a VSATs, Thuraya and BGANs. And since Thuraya is owned by some Arabs, they can actually switch off the signal or block it in specific areas in the Arab world such a Sudan or Egypt. They even disable GPS functionality on the iPhone.

Maybe instead of leaving they'd have gone the Tunisian way http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/01/eff-calls-immediate-action-defend-tunis.... I wonder what would happen if this is done in Kenya. On 1/28/2011 5:04 PM, Billy A wrote:
