You will never get a straight forward answer, for this reason: linux is personal choice and experience is the best teacher. You see unlike windows, its how you relate to the distro in terms of do you find it easier to do this here than there. Essentially you have to test yourself and see where you shall be most productive. lets also not forget apart from the distro there is the desktop you chose (KDE, GNOME, XFCE etc etc)...which will also instigate another long thread. Personally I prefer Ubuntu for my desktop & CentOS for servers. But honestly enterprise class you are better of going for Suse Enterprise and/or opensuse. They make life pretty simple especially if you have to administer. Have a day full of choice. Regards, -- Lusiola Brian Everyone has photographic memory, not everyone has film though.

I think I will agree with Brian. Personnaly I have never had a passion for Ubuntu but for server I would agree on the redhat family as preference ie Fedora, CentOS or Redhat itself. Abt Suse I run it on my Laptop. Cheers Themburu -- Conservatism is the adherence to the old tried against the new untried.

I have deployed both ubuntu server and centos and they work fine. I don't notice they even exist. Sometimes it's not the distro but how it's deployed. @Cynthia, imho, big mistake! :-)
1) Learn it first thoroughly and test your various scenario deployments. ( minimum 1 year ) 2) Learn to support it. ( minimum 1 year ) 3) Keep your learning curve continuos into 3 and 4th year. You are now ready to make the transition. Without these, you are going to run into major problems and remember its a DIY service or the nearest help is either google or skunks... Whatever you do, for enterprise look at commercial support scenarios but do learn it first and quite comprehensively. Me thots.. :-)

i also advice to use Fedora it will not let you down personally i dont trust ubuntu. if you cant get fedora Suse will do but check for the latest version On Wed, Nov 25, 2009 at 12:13 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Cynthia, a few questions if you don't mind: - what do you plan to use the servers for? (mail/web/files/media/general-purpose etc) - who will be administering them? - what is their expertise level? - are they expected to be full-time system administrators? - which do you have more of: money (to pay someone to do it) or time (to get your hands dirty on occasion if need be?) Hi Cynthia, I have played around with so many Linux distros you can easily think am a linux-whore :) but i have also cheated on it with UNIX variants and Solaris. My perception is that you want a Linux Desktop as well as a platform for running your test for enterprise systems. I would recommend you go for Ubuntu for simple reasons, in this case it would be ideal for the desktop as it has current applications e.g OpenOffice 3 for *.docx support and also easy NTFS support, the last time checked CentOS/RHEL doesnt support NTFS by default. For the other applications you want to run i.e mail/web etc, the installations on Ubuntu for newbies is quite simple and the support available widely on the internet. CentOS/RHEL is a very good enterprise class OS but I have my reservation on using it as my daily desktop OS as most applications are older stable versions. If all the opinions in here still confuse you install one and virtualize the other, at least that is what I do. -- ˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙ 'spɹɐƃǝɹ ıʞnɾu pıʌɐp

Rule #1. Never ask techies what Linux version is the best or better or which to use. Its like asking a bunch of children which is the best sweet in the supermarket. Just go to distrowatch.com, then wikipedia and install the linux distribution you felt you liked.
