If there's a critical mass of devs/ techies/ creatives why not? Doesn't really need to be called 'iHub' On Fri, Mar 9, 2012 at 10:54 AM, Watchman <skunkingrahim@gmail.com> wrote:

With iHub, is it assumed that the only people who require the services are resident in Nairobi? If yes, then I think it's upon the Counties to start their own iHubs at central locations within the counties. Oh, I need to read again the idea behind iHub, and the objectives. Even before the politicians step forward, the idea of County Tech Hubs (great name!) is perhaps gonna take a bit of time to realize - if ut ever gets practical. Why? 1. Most companies/even govt, still centralize almost all their ops in NBI. It will take them time to County-rize them. This also makes the techies believe that NBI is everything. I think it will take quite some time for the techies to move back to the counties. 2. The Counties as devolved govt units are so large, so much that the only way would be to setup several Tech Hubs within a county, so that they're easily accessible/reachable. The problem I see here is that of having idle/dormant Tech Hubs given that not all counties (sub counties) will produce enough users for such facilities. It might not make economic sense to have them in the counties until such a time when people's thinking will have switched from NBI->Counties. Wait a moment - I have just killed the County Tech Hubs idea? :-) Not quite though. Having Tech Hubs at the Social Centres in the sub-counties may make more sense.... @Washington, I prefer to think that the tech hubs outside Nairobi which would flourish just as well and maybe even do better than the H.Q. The main reason is that they may be more focussed in technologies that are not really related to Computing but biased to what the county is known for, for instance brewing of local drinks, optimising agricultural operations or supply of clean water. Wikipedia's definition of technology [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology ] Martin.

@Martin, You may be right, but does anyone focus on anything other than ICT at the Nairobi iHub? Nairobi is so much know for Robberies and car vandals, but I haven't heard any day at the iHub where people discussed how to reduce these incidents! In the same context, I was thinking the county tech hubs will simply focus on ICT...:) On Mon, Mar 19, 2012 at 11:26, Martin Chiteri <martin.chiteri@gmail.com>wrote:

Me thinks the tech hub in Nairobi is more focussed on making coffee 8-) (Pun intended) I thought someone attempted to make Ushahidi map crimes within / out of the city, no? Martin.

Mapping crimes is not the same thing as working out ways to reduce crimes, ama? On Mon, Mar 19, 2012 at 11:34, Martin Chiteri <martin.chiteri@gmail.com>wrote:

An attempt is an Attempt @Wash, lets be a little fair here :) Martin.

incidentally -> http://www.hatari.co.ke/ talking of 'working out ways to reduce crime' -> loads of cctv coverage would be a way. @Josiah, CCTV is not the panacea to crime, UK is one of the most cctv'ed places on earth, yet crime is still there. I'ld think a multi-pronged approach would work better; cctv, better paid cops, justice system which works faster, less corruption etc

cctv would be useful either way. e.g if there was some cctv coverage of country bus station... Obviously better paid + trained cops would go a long way. On Mon, Mar 19, 2012 at 12:21 PM, Peter Karunyu <pkarunyu@gmail.com> wrote:

I have a prototype for a police car that has a Vsat terminal that you cant even see on top of the car . The Vsat has cameras all over the can take video and snap shots of incidences and send back to the station for analysis and action. Just a good way of reporting crimes with evidence On Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 10:42 AM, Josiah Mugambi <josiah.mugambi@gmail.com>wrote:
cctv would be useful either way. e.g if there was some cctv coverage of country bus station...
Obviously better paid + trained cops would go a long way.

talking of 'working out ways to reduce crime' -> loads of cctv coverage would be a way. Just that it is not that cheap and needs input from stakeholders like CCN and @KenyaPolice
@Josiah, CCTV is not the panacea to crime, UK is one of the most cctv'ed places on earth, yet crime is still there. I'ld think a multi-pronged approach would work better; cctv, better paid cops, justice system which works faster, less corruption etc

Hi, I have a pal who had done some research and prototype of how to implement a face tracking system similar to what is done by the police forces in North America, source code here [ https://github.com/chiteri/facetracking ] In a nutshell, what it does is that its has a back-end for learning of faces using some machine learning algoriths (Fast-fourier tranforms mostly I think) in separate libraries. You can feed it with faces of known criminals from a database. After that all you need is a Mobile camera, preferably mounted on a police car simply moving around the city. If it finds a match it notifies the relevant authorities, via e-mail or SMS for instance. In no time, you have the whole place crawling with cops, police dogs, helicopters, etc. Mad fun!! ..... and then shortly afterwards, you can map out where some of the most dangerous felons have been captured .... :) Martin.

Thats interesting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 12:43 PM, Martin Chiteri <martin.chiteri@gmail.com>wrote:

he he, Facial recognition may need those dual core phones which we wonder what the extra core are fore. At the same time, I know analytics have been used in the past to predict drug labs even before they came up, based on past data fed into them. machine leaning has also been used to identify tanks on the ground, but later failed at some point. training photos were all taken on a cloudy day and machine learned tanks = cloudy day

LOL... sorry, I missed the keyword there. I agree with you. On Mon, Mar 19, 2012 at 11:50, Martin Chiteri <martin.chiteri@gmail.com>wrote:
