Vic, you probably don't want to know who did this site. You could suddenly find it impossible to inhibit the urge to whack the "web-designer" with a crowbar. :) On 6/13/12, victor yegon <viktayeg@gmail.com> wrote:

ehh whats wrong with the site. What if the designer actually met the requirements? I mean who dictates what a site should look like. As far as I can tell the content there is way better than some 'well designed' sites. How about maybe offer a suggestion on what you'd like to see, if you did a free site for the state house for instance what makes you believe we would like it more than the one there? @John Gitau, Lets first establish where you stand in regards to web design stuff, what do you think of http://www.whitehouse.gov/ in terms of: - Content "richness" - Aesthetics To make it even easier, if YOU had to contribute 100k from YOUR pocket for a website, would you rather get whitehouse.gov or statehousekenya.go.ke? well I dont care much for the design. If i was to be picky I'd say the fact that the site has links supposed to point to speeches that 'dead end' is just wrong. What I am having an issue with is blanket procramations of site is bad. If you look back the last time I saw such a rant <http://www.wanjiku.co.ke/2012/05/companies-registry-website-cost-62-million-cant-even-search/> ( http://www.wanjiku.co.ke/2012/05/companies-registry-website-cost-62-million-...) someone complained about the companies registry and gave a very concise list of their issue with that portal. Im asking you to not compare our statehouse with white house site and instead point out issues with the site that we can actually go out and fix especially since Im sure this site was funded with my tax shillings. I understand UX (trust me on this one or don't - no matter:-)). However no matter how you do it without content I don't care. This is a government site. I wouldn't care less so long as they had the content they are purporting to give on the site. And I am a user too telling you I care more about content. they can put it as plain text files if they want to. It is a government site, they really shouldn't care for my emotions, they should care that I get a service off it. what were tehy initially trying to communicate? does the site communicate it? You put this on a public forum and I'm just pointing out what I ( a user) cares about. Twitter.com (@3rdworldnet) is probably the ugliest site I ever saw (my opinion) but millions spend time there for those 140 characters. on a scale of 1 - 10 I rate it 2:-) this was a rating thread after all:-)) we should do a custom poll to rate all the government sites on UX/content/utter rubbish etc.... gitau On Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 10:56 AM, Kibui Maina <mainakibui@gmail.com> wrote:

John Gitau is absolutely right...Content is king and research has actually shown that users can usually put up with a bad design so long as they are getting the "right kind" of content, take a look at wikipedia, and facebook, where they started from.... A user’s perception of a Web site can evoke a wide range of emotions and attitudes. These emotions and perceptions impact the user’s attitude towards the Web site’s content, advertised products, company, credibility and site usability.
The design and presentation of a Web site is strongly visual and users are known to make aesthetic judgments of a site very quickly. Since the site’s aesthetics can influence brand perception and credibility, the importance of design and color treatments must be considered.

Let me attempt to do so, other skunkpeople can add and/or correct where I am wrong: *Technical* 1. The site uses frames, deprecated since HTML 4.01 2. There is no doctypeencoding, meaning browsers can render the site whichever way they want 3. The design seems targeted for mobile devices, maybe the code to detect user agent is not working? 4. http://statehousekenya.go.ke/ does not automatically redirect to http://www.statehousekenya.go.ke/, very easily fixed using .htaccess rules. 5. W3C Validator<http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.statehousekenya.go.ke%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0>reports 15 errors and 2 warnings 6. The CSS used is on-page, this tends to make it harder for browsers to cache it *Security* 1. The folders which contain the various assets are not secured. The simplest way is to place an empty index.html into those folders. 2. The site is hosted on Apache 1.3.31, which was released on 11th May, 2004. This pag <http://httpd.apache.org/security/vulnerabilities_13.html>e on apache.org has a list of vulnerabilities this particular version is prone to. *Usability and SEO* 1. There is no search 2. There is no feedback section 3. There is a lot of content that is inside PDF files, makes it a bit harder to get to it from a SEO perspective 4. There is no meta description or meta tags, plus all of the other important meta tags 5. PageSpeed reports that the site could do with: - Compressing HTML - Helping browsers cache the content - Optimizing images - Minifying the HTML - Specifying a character set. *The smaller details* - There is no favicon *The Pros* 1. The site seems super fast 2. At last, a website without JavaScript! 3. It renders well on a mobile device On Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 10:37 AM, John Gitau <jgitau@gmail.com> wrote:

Let me attempt to do so, other skunkpeople can add and/or correct where I am wrong:
*Technical*
1. The CSS used is on-page, this tends to make it harder for browsers to cache it
*Security*
1. The folders which contain the various assets are not secured. The simplest way is to place an empty index.html into those folders. 2. The site is hosted on Apache 1.3.31, which was released on 11th May, 2004. This pag<http://httpd.apache.org/security/vulnerabilities_13.html>e on apache.org has a list of vulnerabilities this particular version is prone to.
*Usability and SEO*
*The smaller details*
- There is no favicon
*The Pros*
1. The site seems super fast 2. At last, a website without JavaScript! 3. It renders well on a mobile device

These guys just made sure that the site can be accessible via mobile, actually I would call it a mobile site, placed on the web. Mocality did that, launching on an only mobile platform, going web later. But since this is a huge budget institution, capable of Ksh 80k mandazis, you would expect them to spend money on the whole hog. Rating: 1, just coz it caters for the 60% of internet users in .ke, mobile. Let me attempt to do so, other skunkpeople can add and/or correct where I am wrong:
*Technical*
*The smaller details*
- There is no favicon
*The Pros*
1. The site seems super fast 2. At last, a website without JavaScript! 3. It renders well on a mobile device

well I dont care much for the design.

@John Gitau,
Lets first establish where you stand in regards to web design stuff, what do you think of http://www.whitehouse.gov/ in terms of:
- Content "richness" - Aesthetics
To make it even easier, if YOU had to contribute 100k from YOUR pocket for a website, would you rather get whitehouse.gov or statehousekenya.go.ke?

ehh whats wrong with the site.
