Qmail SMTP (MTA) Server - Have you installed

Hi Guys; Has any of you installed a Mail Transfer Agent server ? If yes contact me offlist Hardware Requirements The MTA hardware comprises two SUN X2100 entry-level servers. Model: A75-BFB1-H-2GB-FA8 *Description*: 1 * AMD Opteron Model 175 dual core processor, 2 * 1 GB un-buffered ECC PC3200 DDR-400 memory, 1 80 GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA hard drive, no DVD, 2 * 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports, 6 * USB 2.0 ports, 1 * PCI-Express x8 slot, Java Enterprise System and Solaris 10 Pre-Installed. Power requirements: Max 400 Watt per server. Sofware As MTA software, it is recommended to use Qmail for external MTA set up. Qmail is an Internet Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) for UNIX-like operating systems. It's a drop-in replacement for the Sendmail system provided with UNIX operating systems. Qmail uses the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) to exchange messages with MTA's on other systems. Regards

Hi Joram, Could you give more information on what this MTA will be doing i.e serving an enterprise or ISP, what load is expected any virus/spam filetering required etc. What do you need for integration with POP/IMAP and Webmail (if needed at all) etc. You may want to consider Exim or Postfix against Qmail. Largely because Qmail is no longer being developed but being patched. It however remains stable and functional but will lack in features and ease of integration compare to the others mentioned. The MTA is used for MMS IF (MultiMedia Messaging International Forwarding). It connects to the MMC (Multi Media Center) for MM4 interface. This is where we send Multimedia Messages from one operator to another. Like send MMS from Safaricom to MTN etc . The MTA then connects to a GRX (International MMS gateway) on the other end. GRX here is like France Telecom , Belgacom etc MMC---->MTA---->GRX On Tue, Jul 7, 2009 at 11:47 AM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

All those other details aside, we are talking about the MTA, right? Now, from my little knowledge, there is not much difference in functionality (not implementation!) between Postfix, Exim, Sendmail, Qmail or even M$exchange. So what is your question, again? :) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

If you mean that they all talk rfc2821 yes they all do, only that qmail has to go through patching to make it work i.e its not rfc2821 compliant out of the box. - Correct me if am wrong. (not
implementation!) between Postfix, Exim, Sendmail, Qmail or even M$exchange.

So maybe the question should be is there an MTA that lets you get a good night sleep at night ;) and turning features on is a config line option rather than a patch - see Qmail and IPv6 support and compare to Postfix/Exim. Regards, Mich

Postfix is what i would go with.... http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Best+MTA+in+linux&aq=f&oq=&aqi= 2009/7/7 Michuki Mwangi <michuki.mwangi@gmail.com>

Apart from all that from Mich, another preferrence would be - have you worked with any MTA before? and which one are you comfortable with? I know qmail can be hell setting up, but its still the most secure of all time - though I'd consider it last on my prefs. ./Ok3ch On Tue, Jul 7, 2009 at 3:47 PM, Michuki Mwangi <michuki.mwangi@gmail.com>wrote:
