Apart from all that from Mich, another preferrence would be - have you worked with any MTA before? and which one are you comfortable with? I know qmail can be hell setting up, but its still the most secure of all time - though I'd consider it last on my prefs.

If you mean that they all talk rfc2821 yes they all do, only that qmail
has to go through patching to make it work i.e its not rfc2821 compliant
out of the box. - Correct me if am wrong.

So maybe the question should be is there an MTA that lets you get a good
night sleep at night ;)

and turning features on is a config line option rather than a patch -
see Qmail and IPv6 support and compare to Postfix/Exim.
