I'd like to hear what @Adam Nelson has to say about this. CCK's move is the perfect example of a loser mentality. Instead of facing the emerging challenges head on, which requires more resources (brain power, money, excellent leadership) and is much more risky, they chose the easy way out. Easy for them. I believe the internet space is one of the few markets where the provider must know they are competing against the world, not just the region. And I believe once they reach like 70% of what the 'big shots' offer, it wont even require CCK to make customers to host locally. According to the first paragraph, the law has been proposed. I think this is the point where we should come together and show the negatives of such a move. Depending on how active we want to be, it could be as simple as a facebook group, an online petition or go shout 'haki yetu' outside CCK offices. Either way, the talk needs to go to the guys coming up with the law. Its not enough to talk about it amongst ourselves. On 28 November 2013 08:47, Tech List Kenya <techlistkenya@gmail.com> wrote:

If I have a .com domain purchased from an international domain seller and I host it there, there is no way to restrict a Kenyan accessing my website from here unless you go china way. Its like trying to restrict someone from accessing facebook.com and forcing them to use facebook.co.ke. The only thing they can do is restrict the local registrars for .co.ke domains to switch off domains in that extension. Which is why I said that can only restrict .co.ke domains. So if you have blahblah.co.ke, Just go and purchase blahblah.com/biz/info (Its actually cheaper). You can then have both domain point to the same server. Once they pass any such restricting laws and shutdown your .co.ke domain, you'll simply continue using your .com domain. The other alternative is to have a very simple host here and anyone going to your site is redirected to the .com one. Local hosting just ain't cut for reliability On Thu, Nov 28, 2013 at 9:01 AM, Gichingiri Kuria <gmail@gichingiri.com>wrote:

I do not think in this day and age such proposals and remarks from govt officials should just be left sitting in the media without the requisite reprimanding. I mean with all the expertise at the CCK, this just translates to blatant ignorance. Paying leadership for incompetence is a waste of taxes. Why is there no push from the IT fraternity for the proposer of this daftness to resign? IT contributes significantly to the economy, why not get involved in the decisions being made? I believe the internet space is one of the few markets where the provider must know they are competing against the world, not just the region. And I believe once they reach like 70% of what the 'big shots' offer, it wont even require CCK to make customers to host locally. It will be natural

Necessity is the mother of invention. Hacking being a major problem that bothers even the most advanced countries, apart from spying what else is in the offing? Tracking users is just but a lame excuse. We are getting calls from guys behind bars using foreign numbers not to mention QoS is generally poor across all service providers, i think if they start with the basics by the time they are getting to this mambo jambo we wouldn't have as many questions to ask. Besides, competition is what spurs growth in any market, forcing pple to host locally is simply going to kill the registration of .co.ke and whatever organization they will be creating will not serve any purpose apart from draining more taxes.... maybe thats the end game On Thu, Nov 28, 2013 at 12:08 PM, solomon kariri <solomonkariri@gmail.com>wrote:

The internet is but a Global Village, CCK's push is retrogressive, manipulative and meant to be a first step towards censoring and controlling the flow of information. I can for instance support the idea that everybody uses .ke domain rather than .com but then KENIC should be opened up more for serious public scrutiny and only allowed to open as an open registry i.e be in charge of only the ccTLD and not .co.ke, .me.ke etc, these should be left to the private sector for innovation to thrive. My two cents. thanks, Lucas. Sometimes I wonder whether these officials who make such statements really know what they are talking about. Problem of written speeches.

If I have a .com domain purchased from an international domain seller and I host it there, there is no way to restrict a Kenyan accessing my website from here unless you go china way. Its like trying to restrict someone from accessing facebook.com and forcing them to use facebook.co.ke. The only thing they can do is restrict the local registrars for .co.ke domains to switch off domains in that extension. Which is why I said that can only restrict .co.ke domains. So if you have blahblah.co.ke, Just go and purchase blahblah.com/biz/info (Its actually cheaper). You can then have both domain point to the same server. Once they pass any such restricting laws and shutdown your .co.kedomain, you'll simply continue using your .com domain. The other alternative is to have a very simple host here and anyone going to your site is redirected to the .com one. Local hosting just ain't cut for reliability

It will be natural
