*Skunkafternoon, Has anyone used Ubuntu* 10.10. Any feedback on a day to day usage. Im on on Version 10.4 and thinking of formatting it come December when workload is less. Importantly, how compatible is it with office 2010 using wine/crossover? Regards, Eric Mugo.

Why format, when you can just upgrade

I did an upgrade to 10.10 early this month from 10.04 (which I've used since April) using the alternate amd64 cd. Running on HP 6715b. IMHO 10.10 is unstable...saw my first freeze there after a day of use! The first thing you notice is increased CPU usage even with no user programs running - this is also on the net so I guess I'm not the only observer. Word of advice: test on a box before you 'jump ship'. Maybe its my hardware platform, but I formatted and went back to 10.04 and my machine is a happy penguin.

I am using 10.10 on my laptop and its ok. The best thing to do is to hook it up on the net after u hv just installed, this will help u download all s/ware and updates u require b4 u start experiencing it. One thing though, Wine is not just clicking with Office 2007, so I doubt if Office 2010 will be better. IMOO, sometimes a format is the best way to go so that u start with a clean install! I hv not tried crossover since it cost $$$ while I hv genuine Windows and Office 07 CDs! :-) I will try removing Wine and re-installing again to see if it will change.... -- Regards, Greg -------- Life is not a rehearsal, you only live once!

Better yet, I think its better to wait for the next release then update to the previous one. IMO, Fresh releases of Linux esp Fedora tend to be unstable for the first few months after launch. There is usually new technology or new ways of doing common stuff e.g. Sound playback on Fedora 11 which may have a few bugs on release. By the end of the cycle, the OS is usually stable. True, Upgrading can result in orphaned packages e.g upgrading from Fedora 13 to Fedora 14 and you can no longer run Gedit as root due to some python package, If u prefer tip top performance, then reinstall

For those having problems running packages in root in Fedora 14, ie packages like Gedit you can use them as root by using the command su - rather than just su. Difference is that su - puts you in the root environment while su just gives root privileges -- with Regards: Cunning Nairobi Hawkers http://gramware.blogspot.com/2010/10/nairobi-hawkers-and-fraud.html
